Archie stared for any hint of sarcasm or playfulness in his girlfriend's face.
"Wait... No, that's impossible. I don't believe you"
Veronica's eyes raised questionably, "Don't believe me? That's rich."
He glared at her. "It just doesn't make sense, that's all I'm saying. Like, okay, Betty-..."
He trailed off. He knew anything he said would sound horrible to Veronica. The silence made her frustrated.
"I don't see anything wrong with it, Archie. Do you?" she pressed.
"You don't know them like I do, Ronnie, I'm sorry but you don't. I mean," he avoided her eyes, he knew she's going to hate that he said that, "Jughead doesn't even like girls, he doesn't care about that stuff."
Veronica was taken aback.
"I see. Maybe I really don't know them like you do..." she rested a hand on Archie's forearm, "You mean Jughead is gay?"
Veronica considered the possibility, feeling guilty that she'd been accusing Archie. It was true that Jughead never showed any interest in any girls for as long as she knew. When she came to Riverdale, Archie was his only friend. Of course this lifelong companion could be the only person Jug would trust with his secret. It's not his fault if he is ashamed of his sexuality, after all, his father was absent for much of his life. But what would that do to Betty?
Archie pursed his lips, seeing the guilty look on her face. He was surprised that that was the first place her mind went.
"He could be - who knows. I gave up asking him about anything like that in middle school. He just... doesn't respond to it. To other people. Maybe the answer is guys, I don't know."
"Archie, if that's what you think, you have to tell Betty. You can't just sit on this forever, he's your friend!"
"Veronica, I'm not going to do that. Betty isn't even interested in him! She's been in love with me for years, maybe it's all a joke or something, or a plan..."
"She's been...?"
Archie went on talking, obviously embarrassed and explaining frantically. Veronica spaced out, not listening.
He nervously laughed, "I mean, she made it so obvious back in middle school. I don't even- I mean I never thought of her like that. She told me back-"
"She told you?" Veronica silenced him with her words, "And you kept this from me? All this time? She's my best friend, Archie, what the hell! What am I supposed to think right now!?"
