Alina Fairgrieves-Byers and Gabriel Burton have learned to expect the worst, but that doesn't make things less disappointing.

While El had Math with the notoriously strict Mrs. Roles (or, as most of her students called her, Mrs. Rules), Alina and Will had Science together. These classes were on complete opposite ends of the school building, which meant that, when the school day finally ended, El would usually be waiting in Argyle's van before the two of them arrived. It was an arrangement that had worked out for all of them—after all, El wasn't by herself for long. And, even without her powers, she could take care of herself.
At least, that was what Alina thought. She'd never had a reason to doubt her surrogate sister before—after all, El was always proving herself to be more than what people expected of her. Even with Angela and her friends attempting to knock her down, El always got back up.
But when Alina came outside today and saw El's cabin diorama being kicked around like a soccer ball, she began to doubt the whole thing.
A crowd had formed, but through the gaps, Alina could see that it was Angela and her posse—because of course, it was—crushing El's project underfoot. El, probably taken aback and vastly outnumbered, wasn't saying anything. She just stood there, trembling like a leaf, as her bullies did their best to ruin all of her hard work.
Alina jolted to a stop so abruptly that Will, behind her, nearly ran up her back. He opened his mouth—probably to ask what the problem was—but closed it as soon as his own gaze locked onto the scene before him.
"Oh, no," he whispered.
"You've got to be kidding me," Alina hissed. "Assholes. Goddamn assholes."
"Mouthbreathers," Will agreed.
More laughter broke out from the crowd. Alina's fists curled.
"I've about had it with these pieces of shit. First El's presentation, and now this? Someone needs to put them in their places."
Will put a warning hand on her shoulder. "Al," he began, "if you go running in there, you're just going to make things worse. You know what Angela's like. She'll get you in trouble while she gets off scot-free."
