I thought it was an angel who woke me, her voice sweet and light as she sang softly nearby. I kept my eyes closed for a moment, listening to her song.
“Sing to me softly, dream nights away,
Whisper of days yet to come.
Tell me High Griffon; name your child in her day.
Watch her when power she frees.”
I opened my eyes and looked over at Narasia, sitting in a chair across the room from me.
“Where did you learn that song?” I asked.
“I… I don’t remember,” she said softly. “I didn’t know it before I entered this world, but I’ve never heard anyone else sing it… I feel like it’s a part of me.”
“It’s beautiful,” I complimented.
She nodded her head in thanks and rose from her seat to come over and check on me.
“You were fully healed by the time you fell asleep,” she explained. “But the King of Pirates ordered that I check you when you wake anyway. He was worried about you Flame, pacing like a caged creature, snapping at Jumé for delaying you in being brought to me.”
“Did he mention Flint?” I asked.
“No…” she murmured. “I’m hoping that’s a good thing.”
“If he knew Flint was responsible for my injury you would have heard something,” I reassured. “I won’t be the one to give him away either, not until the captain knows that I am the only one permitted to deal with my student.”
“Thank-you,” she breathed. “Take care of him Flame, he’s honest, I don’t want this world to teach him to be different.”
I sighed. “As much as I’d like to promise that I don’t think it’s possible. This world… it changes everyone Narasia, you can only hope for the best, but I’ll try to keep him from getting hurt.”
She nodded, and a sharp knock sounded at the door before it swung open to reveal Mají-jalio. He focused on me, all but shoving Narasia out of the way in his rush to check me over. He rotated my arm, squinting at the skin as if closer scrutiny would reveal an unseen blemish.
“I’m fine,” I said, fighting the laughter that bubbled to my lips. “Narasia did an amazing job.”
“Yes,” he said slowly, straightening up as he released my arm. “The healer performed well, she’s useful to us. Can you walk?”
“Because the condition of my arm affects the usage of my legs,” I said sarcastically, standing up and making a show out of stretching my legs out.
“I was being careful,” Mají muttered.
“Sure,” I laughed. “Can we go now?”
Mají nodded, taking my hand and trying (and failing) to covertly check my arm over again. We took two steps toward the door when Narasia spoke.
“My king… my queen… when will I be permitted to leave tonight?”
Mají whirled around and stared at her, confused and irritated in an instant.
“Who told you that you could leave?” he asked incredulously.
“Tonight’s the conclave,” she whispered. “Attendance is mandatory.”
“I’m the King of Pirates,” Mají said smugly. “I don’t care about what’s mandatory, and I doubt Vidan will miss you, you don’t dance.”
