Three days; it had been three days and I was still lying in a small lake of water, unfed, to be near-drowned repeatedly each day until I reached unconsciousness. I could feel my magic slowly ebbing away as it worked constantly to stop my body from being wracked by chills. At the dawn of day four, I couldn’t help but wonder how much longer my magic would last before I exploded into colored dust; dead.
“Red,” I pleaded softly. “They’re going to kill me; could you do me the human decency of feeding me? I could make a stand then, put on a show, and die honorably. That’s not too much to ask is it?”
He shook his head slowly, his eyes trained on Tempest Storm. “Captain has orders against it. He has my loyalty.”
“Remind me to rip that earring from your ear when I get free,” I hissed. “A fool I was to think you valued your own blood.”
“What does my blood have to do with you?” he asked calmly.
I snarled, but said nothing, claiming silence as Captain Storm approached for yet another day of near-death experiences.
“A lovely day for the truth, don’t you think Flame?” he said, grin still plastered to his face. “Maybe if you’re cooperative today I could do you the mercy of killing you quickly.”
“If I told you I stole it out of Dikamir’s nest would you believe me?” I asked half-heartedly.
“Never trust a pirate,” he laughed. “Honestly wench, you‘ve told me you’ve stolen that diamond from every fathomable place by now, including from my own office. Do you expect me to believe a single word that comes out of your mouth?”
“The best place to put the truth is in a pack of lies,” I countered.
He rolled his eyes, motioning to his crew to pick me up once more. I didn’t struggle, focusing on my last few seconds of air before I was dropped back into the moat. My ring, the signet that showed I was Queen of Thieves, floated in front of my face on its chain as I drifted to the bottom. I stared up at the light above, trying to focus on the patterns of sunlight instead of how close I was to running out of air.
A pair of hands reached down quickly, snatching around to find me. I held out my wrists, confused as to why I was being pulled up so soon. They couldn’t believe that I had run out air already, it had barely been a minute. Hauled up into the light, it was easily apparent why.
The King of Pirates was striding purposefully across the camp, his broadsword already out of its sheath. His black eyes flashed in anger, causing a few of Storm’s crew members to take a step backward.
“You know what I’m here for,” he growled.
“The blood diamond of course,” Storm said, smiling in brightly false way. “I know we should have informed you of its discovery right away my king, but I didn’t think you needed to get your hands dirty for a mere wench. We were going to take care of the problem for you! Retrieving it from this filth and giving it to you!”
“She is mine,” Mají hissed.
My heart began to pound in my chest. He couldn’t believe that I betrayed him, he knew I was loyal! If anyone could see through the illusion enchantment, it would be him.
