While walking up the street into the bookstore, Kai stopped and sighed. Reading was not his thing. Lyra started to open the door, turned back impatiently, and said, "Are you coming?" She was going in with or without him.
As soon as they stepped into the bookstore, Kai saw that he had no hope of more conservation with Lyra. She had disappeared into the world of books.
After an hour, which felt like an eternity to Kai, Lyra was finally satisfied with her book hunting. "I found so many good books, Kai! I think you would like this one. It's about a boy during World War II who falls in love with a blind girl even though they only speak once. I've read it before, and it's great. It's called All the Light We Cannot See. Here check it out," she said as she handed him the book.
Kai reached out to take it, and his hand brushed hers. He immediately turned red and muttered, "Sorry," but Lyra didn't even notice and had already moved on to another book. As she talked, Kai caught himself staring at her again. The more he thought about what he did, the worse he felt about himself. How could Kai hurt such a sweet and pretty girl? Cheating on her was one of the worst decisions he had ever made. They had been in a fight, and he couldn't help it; it was just in the "heat of the moment."
Kai and Lyra were both from Augusta, Maine, and went to elementary school together. They were best friends until her dad got a job in another state, and her parents moved her and her brother out to Kansas City. A few years later, Lyra's parents divorced. Her mom got custody of both the siblings and then moved them back to Augusta for about six months until her mom died. They had no choice but to move back with their dad. During the short six months that Lyra was in Augusta, she had gotten into a relationship with Kai. After her mom died, they got into a fight, Kai cheated, and the rest is history. She stayed with her grandparents for a couple of months before moving back in with her dad. He thought he would never see Lyra again, but here she was.
"Are you ready to go?" Kai said, "Let's go grab something to eat. I know a great restaurant near here."
"Yeah, yeah, sure," Lyra said, still preoccupied with admiring her books.
Kai led her out of the book shop and down to the restaurant. After an excruciating hour of eating while she talked about books, he finally interrupted and said, "Lyra, let's talk about what happened."
"What do you mean?"
"You know... The breakup?"
"Oh, um, look at this book! You know what they say, 'don't judge a book by its cover' but this book was so pretty that I had to buy it. One time-"
"Ly," Kai cut her short, "are you still mad at me?"
"You know, Kai, yes I am."
"Ok, what can I do to make you feel better?"
"Kai, there is nothing you can do to 'make it better' My mom freaking died, and you cheated on me. I got the space I needed from you, and I am trying to get over it. In this situation, the only thing you can do is give me time to heal."
"Do you think there's a chance that you would consider dating me again?"
Lyra paused for a moment before giving Kai a small smile and saying, "Yes, yes, I would."
A/N: Sorry this one is short :(. Anyways here's the question of the week.
