Jake and I left the edge of the trees and walked back to the plane. The sun was fully visible over the tops of the trees, we were on the west side of the island, so while the sunset was fully visible, the sunrise was hidden behind the trees. I was about to put my hand on the handle of the door when it burst open. I lurched backwards as a man stormed out. His eyes were wide and I could see the fury in them as he focused his glare on Jake.
"Where's my brother?" He growled, not trying to conceal the threat in his voice. Carie appeared behind him and pointed subtly to the trees where we had just come from. Jake hadn't seen Carie, and was trying to calm the man down, who was advancing on Jake, becoming angrier and angerier.
Jake was taller than this man, but he had way more raw muscle than Jake did. I saw the man start to clench and raise his fists, and I knew ( sorry, but it's true) that Jake wouldn't stand a chance. I jumped in between Jake and the man, putting my hand on his tense shoulder.
"Let me explain, ok? Let's just take a little walk." I pulled him gently to the left. I knew it was slightly dangerous, seeing how willing he was to fight, but he would be less likely to hit a woman (at least that's what I was hoping for). We walked around the back of the plane and into the edge of the ocean.
The man stayed quiet as we distanced ourselves slightly from the other passengers who were all getting out of the plane. I could tell he was barely able to keep from questioning , and I was dreading having to tell him. Once we were about 30 yards from the plane, with the ocean lapping gently at my feet, I stopped walking, and turned to face the man.
"What's your name?" I asked, deciding that was the best way to start.
"Frank," He grunted, then stopped, obviously waiting for me to explain.
"Look Frank, your brother left the plane this morning, on his own. One of the other passengers saw him leaving and followed to make sure he would be ok. But they only got out of the plane in time to see him be taken by animals." I hated having to say it so bluntly, but there was no option of beating around the bush with something like this. His face went completely blank for a moment before the pain wanted over it, drowning out every other emotion until he got his face under control and let anger block out the pain.
"This is your fault! You and that co-pilot! You should be protecting us, not letting us be taken by animals!" While I was normally good at withholding my anger, the combination of stress and heartbreak made me unable to hold it back.
"We are doing our best to protect everyone here. We have no clue about what's happening, we know just as much as you do! So instead of blaming us you should help us. I know it's hard, you just lost your brother, but now is the time when we need yo be able to lean on each other for help. I'm going back to the plane to see what I can do. Its up to you if you come or not." Who that I turned and walked as quickly as I could without causing too much pain in my knee. There was silence behind me at first, then I could hear the sand shifting behind me as he followed. I walked around the edge of the plane to see people crowded around Jake, who was looking over their heads frantically.
Once he saw me his eyes flooded with relief, and I tried to drag my foot faster through the sand.
"What's going on?" I asked loudly. All the passengers turned to me and one man stepped out in front of the others.
"Look, we don't think you're doing a good enough job to keep us safe. You've let them take two of us! How many more before you decide you guys know what's going on." E said, advancing towards me.
"We are trying our best to do whatever we,can. This is when we need to work together, not fight!" I said, holding my ground as he stopped mere inches from me. Jake came up behind him, not liking how threatening he was acting. But I stopped him with a quick look.
"Well you're not doing enough. We think that we would be safer of we hold in the forest, away from the plane." He said, supported by nodding heads behind him.
"How would that help you? Leaving the only safe place available to you, going into the forest where the creatures live! Yeah, that sounds like a great idea." I couldn't keep the sarcasm from overtaking my voice. The man only replied with a shake of his head, then turned so he was facing the other passengers.
"Who's leaving with me?" He asked. A few people spoke in agreement, so he turned back to me. "We want provisions, we can go through the plane and take half of the food and water." I could tell that he wouldn't be convinced otherwise, so I looked at Jake and shrugged, unable to think of what else to do.Authors note-
