***Alexander's POV***
I stepped into the school feeling groggy. I had started up on my sleeping pills again, and my body hadn't quite readjusted to them.
I tried to pull myself together as I approached my friends. It was so rare that I got here later than Scott, but there he was.
"Hey," I said as I went up to them.
"You look like shit," Scott said.
"Then it's a good thing you weren't attracted to me before this moment," I said.
"You're really late," Bennett said, pointing at Scott. "The grandma got here before you."
"Grandma got her ass in gear this morning," Scott said with a nod.
"Sorry. I slept in," I said, rubbing at my eyes.
"Alexander!"
My heart stuttered as I turned to face Toby. He ran up to me with a nervous smile on his face.
"Uh...can I talk to you during lunch? Please?" he said.
"Of course," I said. "My lunch, or yours?"
"Yours," he said. "I'll come find you."
"Alright," I said, trying not to look too relieved that we were finally talking.
"Great." He smiled. "I'll see you at lunch, Alexander." He turned and went back over to his group of friends, disappearing around the corner with them.
"So, you'll finally be talking to Toby again," Bennett said, leaning against the lockers.
"Yea, I guess so," I said.
"Give him your dog as an apology," Scott said.
"Prescott." I glared at him.
"James." He lazily lifted an eyebrow.
"Cut it out, you idiots. Let's go to class before we're late," Bennett said in annoyance.
We went off to class. The day seemed to drag on forever, and I grew impatient as I waited for it to be lunch time.
When the bell rang and finally released me to lunch, I pretty much sprinted to my usual table. I sat down, not bothering to pull my lunch out. I waited anxiously for Toby, trying to stay collected.
"Alexander?" Toby appeared next to me. "Come on."
I got up and followed him away. Scott and Bennett were probably waiting for me at our lockers, but they would figure out where I was on their own.
Toby led me into an empty classroom, shutting the door. He sighed, running a hand through his hair. There was something about him...
"Let's talk," he said.
Ah, that's what it was. He wasn't bubbly, innocent Toby. This was the Toby that you didn't want to make enemies with. The real Toby.
