Chapter Two:

Not everything in this world is free…

Edward and his brother Mark tried to revive their mother and brother. The plan failed. Now, Edward has lost both of his hands, and Mark is nowhere to be found, or is he?

Mark was stunned by the extreme flash of light. If light could kill a person, Mark would surely have died during that time. Fortunately, the light was gone. Mark opened his eyes to great shock. He was floating on top of nothing. All around him were quotes and sayings from over the years, first appearing in Latin, then magically being translated into English.

Mark looked in front of him. He saw a figure, clad in pure white, coming closer to him.

“Hello to you, honorable friend. It seems like you came here because of something, isn’t it?” said the figure, “well, look no further, for what you seek is behind me."

A large door appeared in front of them, with the words Gate and Truth etched exactly in the middle of the door’s lintel. The door swung open, and large spikes came out. The poles impaled Mark, but not enough to kill him. He was dragged inside the Door, just like his brother.

While inside, the pain he felt was unbearable. The spikes kept on striking his vital organs, but Mark just ignored it. The real pain was felt inside his brain. It felt like thousands of gigabytes of information went into his brain. He felt extreme pain from his brain, as if knowledge was forcibly put inside it. He was stuck inside the Gates for what seemed like forever.

Finally, the time came when the spikes which impaled him let go of him. He dropped into the floor, near lifeless, lacking nutrition. The figure went to him once again.

“Well, that is all the knowledge you’ll ever need in your life,” chuckled the white figure, “However, for all that wisdom, I’ll need some payment. Since you always wanted to be the rock of the family, the breadwinner, I guess I’ll have to take your whole body.”

Mark felt no pain as his soul and mind drifted away from his body. One of the components of his existence was gone. With a mind and soul, but no body, he was no longer human. He turned into a wraith, a wrathful being lacking a body. Without a body, he would roam the world aimlessly, sometimes causing harm to organisms.

His consciousness went back to him. He woke up in the real world once again. However, he felt nothing, as he had no physical body anymore. He was appalled. He will never be able to see the world the same way he saw it before. The world has changed for him.

Who knows? Who knows what has happened to the wraith called Mark? Mark was walking, hovering, rather, towards the nearby antique shop. He went inside the shop. Since he was a wraith, he was invisible to normal eyes. He immediately went inside an empty suit of armor, and thus, he regained his body, albeit in different form.

No one noticed that he was inside the piece of armor. He tried one of the illusion spells his brother used to read. Nothing happened, definitely nothing. He remembered what he saw inside the Gates. Everyone could learn magic, but not everyone could use it. Only a few chosen by the deities of the universe could wield its power. If a mage could use magic, he could only use a single type of magic, and only one mage of one type could exist at a time.

From that information, he realized that Edward was the Mage of Necromancy, the art of calling the undead to this world. Mark tried to think about what his specialty would be, and he remembered the time when he managed to turn himself into diamond. He attempted turning himself into diamond once more, and it worked. The suit of armor became an impenetrable suit of diamond. Mark has found his worth in this world once again. He would become the Mage of Diamonds.
