Growls ripped through the air as I rushed and jumped from branch to branch. I couldn't help the laugh that escaped when I dodged another wolf nipping at my heels. The poor guys couldn't catch me even in my human form; what a pity.
"Is that all you got?" I yelled as I rushed forward with newfound energy.
Within minutes their growls dulled, and I knew I had lost them. I have spent years living in the woods; I knew every tree and bush; no one knew it as I did. It was the place I felt the freest, and angering the wolves I found lurking within was always my source of entertainment.
Not many wolves dared to wander too deep into my part of the forest. It's considered one of the most dangerous territories on the east coast. Unlike all other dangerous territories, mine wasn't owned by anyone. Rogues, powerful and unrelenting, ran these woods.
"Rose? Rose, where are you?" A voice called out from a distance.
I sat on the tree, waiting to see who would emerge. A tall, slender girl walked into the path, her golden blond hair cascading behind her. She looked like an angel, but I knew she was far from that.
"Anastasia, you've made it finally!" I called down to her.
Looking up at me, her curious eyes turned menacing. "You scared me half to death running like that, especially in human form."
Whoops. When I heard the sounds of wolves in the woods, I bolted away from Ana to chase them away from where we were, without telling her.
"They couldn't catch up to me even if their lives depended on it."
"Well, don't do it again." She snapped.
With a smile, I jumped down from the tree and lazily made my way to where she stood. Unlike me, Anastasia doesn't live in the woods. She lived in a small town not far away from here. We met once when I traveled through, and we've been attached by the hip ever since.
Ana seemed cold and harsh from the outside, but once you gained her trust, she would do anything for you. Her heart was made of pure gold wrapped in thorns.
We spent the rest of the afternoon joking and running around. Eventually, we walked to the edge of the woods so she could make her way home.
"Rose, please, please, pleasseee come home with me for dinner. They're making your favorite breakfast for dinner."
My mouth was watering just thinking about it. The great outdoors had many things... but not any pancakes.
Usually, she would sneak them out to me so that her parents wouldn't see, but something was different today.
"With your parents? You know we've never met." I said. We normally avoided them so they wouldn't find out she was wandering the woods alone unprotected.
"Just say yes. They'll love you, I'm sure of it."
With the thoughts of breakfast in my mind, I agreed. It was a damn good bribe.
I should have known not to go. Parents don't usually like to hear their daughter's best friend is an orphan living outside in the forest alone. Specifically, when they find out, she's the most feared rogue known in this half of the country.
