17 July, 1995

The silent beginnings of the dawn were gently interrupted when soft footsteps descended down the concrete floor onto the porch. A peaceful sigh escaped her lips when the dewy grass greeted her bare feet.

Keeping her water-filled utensil aside on the porch table, she bend down.

Her ponytail swept sideways as she bent, then rolled up the end of her track pants till the ankles so that their hem doesn't get soaked up by the wet grass.

Swiftly moving up, her long fingers daintily closed around the utensil again.

With steady, delicate steps, the freshly-showered woman padded across the stretched lawn, towards her destination.

Reaching her favourite holy planter podium, she lifted her hands holding the brass vessel, and tiltled it over the holy basil plant.

Closing her eyes, she let out a soft prayer to the gods above, and slowly offered the water to the Tulsi plant.

As the first drops of water landed over the holy plant, the early golden rays peeked from the dark clouds. The glimmering rays greeted the woman, as always. Streaks of light descended over her form, making the golden band in her ring finger sparkle, with the 'A' engraved on it shining bright as ever.

Oblivious to her surroundings, she remained lost in her prayers when a pair of large hands closed over her small ones, holding the brass vessel. A similar golden band with the engraving 'A' on his left ring finger glittered under the morning light.

Together, the joined hands offered the water to the holy plant and the Sun, completing their prayers in unison.

As the last drops trickled down the Tulsi plant, they withdrew their hands back and ended the prayer.

As soon as her eyes slowly opened, the woman sharply turned around her heels to face the man in similar tracksuit next to her.

But the man had sensed it coming, that's why he immediately apologised. "I'm really sorry biwi, promise I won't be late again."

The man held his ears, his height towering over the woman as she stared at him with narrowed eyes.

As the time stretched in silence, the man was about to repeat his apology when, to his relief, the woman finally spoke up.

"It's alright, I forgive you patidev, because I always pray from your side too. But next time, be on time for the Jal Visarjan." She smiled lovingly at him.

Immediately, a big grin overtook his earlier apologetic features and he instinctively adjusted the specs on the bridge of his nose.

Shouting a big 'woohoo', he grabbed her waist and let out, "You're the best biwi! That's why I love y-"

"Ssshhh!" She slapped his hands and moved away, before he could lift her in the air.

Adding, she hissed, "Are you crazy? We're in the garden! Don't shout like that in early morning and disturb the neighbors!"
