"y/n?"
y/n groans and flips in her bed as joyce tries to get her attention from the doorway.
"y/n you should probably get up soon.. i know it's summer but i thought we could have a family breakfast this morning."
y/n sits up and looks at her mom with her eyes barely open.
"okay mom i'll be out in a second."
joyce leaves and y/n spins her legs off the side of her bed. she lays her head in her hands and rests her elbows on her knees.

todays my date with steve.. she thinks.

holy shit. i have a date with steve harrington.

y/n had always known steve, they've been in school together since they were young, and she's always had a little bit of a crush on him. but now that they were actually going on a date.. she felt like she was meeting someone for the first time.

"mom!! mom??" y/n calls.
"over here y/n-" y/n turns around to see her mom putting magnets on their fridge.
she picks up a drawing of bob that will drew, in the picture he's dressed as a super hero. joyce's face is radiating her sadness, although she tried to hide it.
y/n walked over to her mom and comforted her with her hand on her shoulder.
"you know mom, he could still be out there somewhere.. and i bet wherever he is he's thinking about you."

joyce bit her lip slightly, and pulled her daughter into a hug.
"you're right." joyce never had the heart to tell y/n about all the things happening in hawkins. she usually went to her grandparents house in the summer, and missed most of the craziness that went on. but this year she decided to stay, since it's her last year of school and she wants to enjoy her last summer.
y/n backs up and smiles. "you have work?"
joyce turns her head quickly to the clock. "shit i'm gonna be late-" she kisses y/ns head. "bye hon."

the rest of the day y/n spent spent anticipating her date. she was alone for most of the day, her mom working, will with his buddies, jonathan probably with nancy.

knock-knock

"heyy y/n??" steve's voice echos through the door.
y/n perks up and runs to the door, making sure to fix her hair quickly before opening it.
"steve!" she leans up against the doorframe.
"you ready?" he smiles.
"yes!" they go out to steve's car.
"how's your day been so far?" steve glances over at y/n.
"it's been.. pretty boring." y/n chuckles and looks out the window.
"hopefully i can make it better."
"i'm sure you will."

they reached steve's house and they settled in to watch a movie.
"how abouttt.. nightmare on elm street?" y/n suggests.
"what's gonna happen when you get scared?" steve chuckles and sits next to her, handing her a bag of popcorn.
"that's what you're here for, right?"

y/n is not used to flirting. she was the type to practice asking her crush out in the mirror. but she thought she had practiced enough to test out her skills on steve.

"that's cute." he smiles at her.

score.

as they watched the movie, y/n continued to eat her popcorn. steve slithered his hand on top of hers as she went to grab another piece.
"uh steve.."
"yeah?" he looks at her longingly.
"um my hand." she looks at their hands.
"oh.. sorry." he pulls it off. she reaches into the bag for another handful of popcorn.
steve lays back with his arms resting on the back of the couch. y/n leans her head back, bumping steve's arm.
"steve could you.."
"oh yeah of course." he pulls his arm down and puts his hands to his sides.
y/n watches the movie, focusing completely on the screen.

suddenly the tv stops.
"y/n are you okay?"
"yeah? why are you?"
"yeah but it just feels like you aren't interested in me-"
"what! oh steve i'm so sorry, i am i really am. i just get really into movies."
"well maybe we should've done something where we could get to know each other more.."
"like?"
"wanna go for a walk?"
y/n smiles as steve grabs her hand and pulls her outside.

the sun continues to shine at 8:30, and the two walk around the neighborhood talking.
"stop!! steve!" y/n is running on the sidewalk as steve chases her, acting like a zombie.
"braiiiiiinssss" steve groans while y/n tries to hide behind a tree. "gotcha!" steve grabs her shoulders from behind the tree, a short scream escaping her mouth.
"you're.. you're a lot different harrington.." y/n tries to catch her breath.
"different?"
"then how you used to be.. like hitting on girls all the time and being mean to people who are less popular than you.. i mean.. i'm sorry that was a shitty thing to say."
"no i get it. i actually really appreciate it. i'm trying you know, i'm just looking for a girl to help me grow too.." steve grabs her hand and smiles.
"really?"
"yeah.. i was thinking, would you maybe want to go on another date sometime?"
"i would love to."

and with that their date ended. steve dropped her off back at her house. she ran to the couch and dropped on it.
"steve harrington.." she swoons over the boy.
"steve.. harr-"
the phone rings.
"ughhh.." she picks it up and sighs. "hello?"
"uh hi is this jesse's pizza?"
"oh um no, theirs is 1205.. you mustve dialed 1204."
"oh.. you're right. sorry- and thank you-"
"wait you sound really familiar.. what's your name?"
"oh uh it's robin."
"oh! you work at scoops ahoy!"
"yeah! uh who's this?"
"oh uh.. it's y/n.. i don't know if you know me."
"oh steve's girl? i mean the girl he just went out with, right?"
"yeah.. i didn't know he told you about that."
"haha yeah, well girls is the only thing steve knows how to talk about."
"i bet that gets awkward."
"well.. not really."

y/n and robin stayed up on the phone, just talking, until joyce came through the door.
"oh uh robin i should probably go.."
"oh okay that's fine- do you think i could get your nu- oh well i guess i have it already."
y/n laughs. "okay bye-"
"bye-"
y/n hangs up and looks at her mom.

"who was that?"
"um just a friend.. why?"
"cause you look as red as a strawberry."
y/n brought her hand to her cheeks, and they felt warm.
