music was flowing quietly around the campfire as the hacketteers enjoyed their final night as one big friend group before they all went their separate ways.
abi, emma and nick were all engaged in a deep conversation while jacob and kaitlyn were bickering about something that happened to them years ago, when they were younger. however, ryan nor dylan were paying enough attention to know the subject of which they were fighting about. ryan was sat on a log that was next to the argumentative pairs', his eyes closed as he basked in the ambience of the fire pit. dylan was sat next to the quiet boy, mindlessly playing a random game on his phone since it was the only thing that he could do that didn't require signal.
occasional glances were given in ryan's direction by dylan as he took the short moments to admire the boy who he had formed a liking to over the summer.
dylan didn't know what it was about ryan that was so alluring. ryan was not usually dylan's type. he usually went for big muscle guys and ryan was the complete opposite. there was just something about the mysterious boy that made dylan all giddy when they had any slight interaction.
whatever is was, dylan was determined to get his feelings across to ryan. and he didn't have much time left to do so.
"watcha thinking about?" dylan asked, taking note of ryan's zoned out state while moving closer to the slim boy. ryan snapped out of his daze and looked at dylan. truth was, he wasn't thinking about anything. his mind was empty.
"nothing really... why?"
"just wondering... it's kinda sad that we aren't going to see each other again after tonight." dylan sighed, trying to make conversation. "and the saddest part is... you still haven't given me your number." he frowned, jokingly.
ryan raised his eyebrow at dylan's comment and couldn't help the grin that made its way to his face "you really are desperate for it, huh?"
"yeah, for platonic purposes only of course..." dylan hummed, "we can like meet up and do things..." he shrugged, looking over ryan's face.
"not quite sure you know the exact meaning of platonic..." he chuckled, looking down for a few seconds before looking back at dylan "and what 'things' are you hinting towards?" he asked, slightly amused at dylan's comment.
"let your mind wonder..." dylan winked, gaining a sudden boost of confidence around ryan, which the latter was definitely not expecting.
"oh... you mean-"
ryan was cut off when a loud and quick rustling could be heard in the not so far distance. it was clear that everybody heard it as all of their heads turned to the direction of the abrupt sound.
"what the fuck was that?" kaitlyn mumbled, kind of rhetorically. she looked at the others, noticing the confusion and worry on all of their faces.
"maybe a bird or something?" abi said, hopefully, hoping that whatever it was was nothing bigger than a pigeon.
"no... that was no bird..." nick gulped, subconsciously moving towards abi.
at this point, dylan's cool, calm and collected demeanour had disappeared and fear and worry filled his mind. though he appeared confident to most people, things like this really scared him. ever since he watched movies like nightmare on elm street and friday the 13th he became more conscious of his surroundings and other worldly things. he knew those movies were fake, but they were very fitting considering they were teens at a summer camp, at night. the brunette boy was frightened. seeing other people in fear only made him worse.
