jack and kathleen lennon got married when they were young despite their very religious parents' wishes, and moved away to hawkins, indiana. the couple moved into a small apartment, and shortly after that, kathleen fell pregnant. 9 months later, ruby michelle lennon was born, or, as she discovered she preferred when she was older, mitchy.
unfortunately for the lennons, they were unaware of the responsibility having both a spouse and a baby would be, as well as having to hold a roof over their heads. so, after living in that apartment for only a couple years on their own, they were forced to move into forest hills trailer park in hawkins after mitchy was born, where she proceeded to spend all her adolescence and teenagehood.
growing up, it was difficult for mitchy, between growing up in a crappy trailer, having to work jobs from an early age to support her parents since they couldn't make enough on their own, and also because she was lonely. she didn't always get along too well with her parents, since they had always their own issues, she had no siblings (which she was sometimes glad for), and on top of that, she didn't get along with a lot of people in her school. this was mostly because she was marked as a 'freak' and an 'outcast' just because of the quality of her clothing and social status.
it also didn't help that mitchy was practically a genius. she had always excelled in school, but tried to never make it that obvious to her classmates since any time she 'tried too hard' she was made fun of. of course according to those same kids, all the hard work her parents did with their multiple jobs was 'not trying enough'.
when mitchy hit high school, she knew at that point just to keep her head down low and get through it. focus on her grades, so she could get into a good college, so she could have a good career, so she could have a good life, etc. etc. but, those plans of hers get completely thrown off when during her junior year, the kid she used to babysit when they were younger goes missing. then, when he miraculously comes back—even after having a funeral for him—she starts becoming close with him, will the 'zombie boy', and his family too, the byers.
shortly after that, she somehow gets wrapped into a supernatural shit show, with her best friends consisting of a bunch of middle schoolers—one of them having super telekinetic powers—and the former 'king' of hawkins high school, which was weird in itself. and, somehow, she graduates without ruining her 4.0 GPA, but proceeds to turn down multiple invitations to go to different ivy league colleges just to go to a local community college so she could stay near her friends, who were weird and sometimes mildly annoying, but nerds, just like her.
formerly, she worked a job at a little ice cream shop in a big, flashy mall with her best friend steve, where she met her other best friend (and former fling) robin. but, not long after after that mall opened, another supernatural/alien problem ensued, destroying the mall, evidently being covered up as a 'mall fire'.
so, here mitchy is, still working at local records/music store 'hawkins music & tunes' that she worked at ever since she was 14, with her mom the manager of it, as she took college classes on the side. she has to now balance school, work, her parents problems, including her father's alcoholism, as well as her own problems, including her and her friends supernatural shenanigans that happen every few months. and now, this time around, she also has to deal with the guy that's lived across from her in the trailer park their entire lives, who sells drugs, still hasn't graduated high school by 20, and is somehow worming his way into her geeky, music-filled heart.
