seraphina hargrove didn't believe in love. not romantic love at least. after growing up with the worst concept of love thanks to her father, she lost hope of finding it one day.
seraphina's parents relationship was complicated, to not say abusive—which definitely was. the family of four lived in malibu, california.
her twin, william hargrove, billy. billy was the perfect sibling, he was her twin, but they didn't look much alike. billy and seph complimented each other.
after years of physical and psychological abuse, their mom finally decided to ask neil hargrove for a divorce. neither billy and seraphina exactly knew, but for them, their mother just ran away, she still called, but it wasn't the same. she never visited.
one day they stopped receiving calls, and neil started to be abusive again, arriving home late and drunk, physically abusing his own son while his daughter tried to muffle her cries in her pillow as she covered her ears, silently begging him to stop.
the routine was endless. but billy and seph continued to love and help each other.
susan mayfield and her daughter maxine changed everything. at least for some years. when neil met susan he changed, when the twins met susan they were polite and quiet, when billy met max he hated her, when seraphina met max she loved her.
the change didn't last much though. after a couple of years of his marriage with susan, neil started being abusive again, and fell in the circle of alcohol and drugs.
when seraphina was sixteen she lost her virginity, and started drinking. when she turned seventeen, she started to occasionally smoke.
four months before seraphina turned eighteen, neil decided to move with his family to hawkins, indiana.
a supposedly calm town.
