"Hey, are you going to Sascha's party?"
Daenaries ignored the question. Of course whoever the person was that asked it couldn't possibly be talking to her. She was a nobody. A loser. And Sascha just happened to be the most popular girl in school, the day she gets an invitation to one of her parties would be the day hell freezes over.
Yes, but whoever it was must have been talking to her because she asked the question again, this time a little louder and with a little more clarity as if she had not heard it clearly enough the first time. She looked up from the boring magazine she'd been absently flicking through, and into a face with eyes of such undiluted blues - she didn't know if the tiny flicks from her dark pupils were violet or indigo.
One thing she did know was that there was only one person in their entire school with those eyes, and hair that black.
"Daenaries, right? Daenaries Syalistair?"
She couldn't do anything but nod her head.
"Can I join you? This is kind of heavy."
For the first time, Daenaries saw the silver plater of food in her arms. She nodded again, watching as she gracefully maneuvered her legs over the form and took a seat. A hint of envy surge through her when Daenaries noticed what she was wearing.
A snow-tiger print top, matching heels, and jeans that clung to her skin like satin. And then there was the color-coded jewelry. Damn. What made the envy pinch a little before it left, was her natural beauty. Not a single smear of make-up, but her skin looked as though it glowed.
"I'm Raine-" She took a seat, placing her food in-between them. "Raine Dantez."
I know. She wanted to scream but decided to keep the snarky comment to herself. It wasn't Raine's fault why all - and she meant ALL - of the other girls hated, teased, and left her covered in bruises. No, it was that jealous bitch Sascha's. "Is it true your family just moved here from Bulgaria?"
Nice one, D. The only time you actually speak to a popular person and the first thing you want to do is engage in gossip! Smooth.
"Yes."
She frowned. "Why'd you come here? I mean, to New Zealand of all places?" The most boring country in the world.
Raine smiled, bearing her perfectly straight, perfectly white teeth. "We're looking for something." Taking her apple she shined it beneath the table before biting into it. Raine nodded toward the remaining fruit - peaches, grapes, mangos, watermelons.
"No, thanks." She forced a smile, still unsure why today of all days, Raine chose to sit with her. "So what are you looking for?"
"Oh, um...here's the rest of the clan."
Clan? Did she mean her siblings? Daenaries looked around...not at their usual table...or in line getting their meals. She did noticed everyone else staring back at her though, some of them were even glaring. She twisted back around and almost screamed. What the hell? "Where did you guys come from?"
The male sitting opposite her smiled, his hazelly eyes crinkling at the corners. "You ask an awful lot of questions."
What was that supposed to mean? She'd asked him a maximum of one.
Raine cleared her throat. "I'm sure you know my brother, Dmitri."
Who didn't? He and his brothers names were on everyone's lips these days.
"That's my sister, Alimaze, and our brother, Lincoln."
Daenaries managed a smile. This was by far the weirdest day of her life. Four of the most popular people in their school were sitting with her. Her! But...there was one missing. "Where's Lennox?"
