Daenaries blankly glanced between the three siblings.
Mate? As in the only person his soul couldn't live without? She barely stopped the urge to swoon. And here she was thinking only wolves mated.
That's true - her conscience sighed - remember, they call themselves Night-Shifters. She did remember. They'd come out of concealment nine years ago, thousands and thousands of beautiful creatures able to reform into their second-halves to become the beasts within.
Night-Shifters. She'd soon discovered the name was a irreconcilable one. For years surveillance of their "transformation" went viral worldwide - the internet was the most popular source, and then they began showing snippets of them changing at will on the news, and spreading the panic through papers and other sources.
But that didn't mean their existence wasn't shrouded in mystery...because it was. No one outside of their race knew the intimate details of their creation.
No, but you do - her mother said. Your father mentioned it in one of his private sermons. When one mates, they mate for life. This life and the next- Wait! No. She can't be his mate. He didn't even like her for Christ-sakes.
"Calm down, Lennox." Raine's hand smoothed down one of his shoulders, but he just shrugged it off. "Fine. Be a idiot, but you know Akaya will kick your ass if you so much as threaten him."
"That's right baby brother." Lincoln said with laughter in his words.
Akaya? Who's Akaya? "Lincoln, what the hell is going on?" She whispered.
"Don't talk to him!" Daenaries caught Lennox's glare.
"Why the hell not?" She retorted and returned that glare. She was used to people looking at her like that and she couldn't care less. "He's my friend." She was so caught up in Lennox's otherworldly eyes, she missed Lincoln backing away. When she turned to search for him, he was gone, a blur in the shadows of forest-greens.
Lennox did that growling thing again, almost making her jump out of her skin. "You're my mate! Mine!"
She took a quick step to the right and inhaled a deep breath of air. His eyes were so sharp, watching her every movement. "I like you, but you're crazy, " she swallowed, backing away slowly. "I can't be your mate."
Lennox took a lazy step forward but the savage edge in his eyes remained.
And what did she do?
She ran. Ran until her lungs ached, ran until it felt like she was running for her life. She almost tripped but managed to steady herself. That would've been an embarrassing face-plant.
Calm down, she willed herself. She didn't even know why she was running. Because you're a coward? Yes, most likely.
By the time she made it back to the road, she was completely breathless. She checked her wristwatch - 2:37 PM. Great, now she was late for class.
Slipping through the main-entrance doors, she turned left, and crept down the long hallway lined with grey lockers. Her mind flooded with the words of Lennox's deep, husky voice. His mate. No. Surely not.
When she reached another set of doors, she pulled them open and started climbing the stairs. Four floors up and she'd finally made it to her destination.
History. Yaye, for her!
"Sorry I'm late, Mr Jacobs." She said the moment she stepped into the large classroom. The flow of noise stopped as all eyes turned to scrutinize her. She heard someone mumble something - probably Sascha - but she didn't care. She just made her way to her usual seat and plonked herself down. Like every class she took, this was her own dark corner
