We waited for a good hour to make sure the coast was clear for me to make my escape.
" Got everything Miss Sanders? " Patrick asks as he escorts me towards his door.
" Yes Mr. Stump I have everything I'm sure thank you " I say back to him.
He unlocks his door and we both walk down the hall towards the elevator. Just as we get to the silver plated door, my phone begins vibrating in my purse.
" I think you've worried them enough, don't you think? " Patrick says giving me his sea green eyes a glare. I take my phone out of my purse, " I suppose so..."
" So what's gonna be your story? " Patrick leans forward and hits the button to open the elevator doors.
" Went home early. Phone died. Went out to breakfast. Didn't get home until now. Would that work? " I step into the elevator just as Patrick grabs my wrist and holds his hand in front of the elevator doors so they don't close.
" Change breakfast to brunch since they checked your favorite food place this morning... " He suggests and smirks. My cheeks burn once more and are instantly cooled as his lips press to mine once more before he releases me and the elevator doors close.
I stand there in awe.
Holy. Smokes.
I gains stability by leaning against the walls of the elevator.
Did....that really just happen?
Yeah Kora, I'm pretty sure you just spent the night with you history teacher.
I run my fingers through my hair in disbelief, trying to make sense of this...but none of my thoughts can comprehend what happened last night.
My phone buzzes in my hand brings my attention from Patrick to Pete, Angie and Kristina.
Its Pete this time.
Showtime Kora Sanders,
Let's see how well you act.
" Hello? "
" OH MY GOD GUYS SHE PICKED UP! " A sudden shriek of joy and astonishment comes from the receiver end of the phone.
" HOLY FUCKING SHIT KORA! WHAT THE FUCK?! " Is yelled right into my ear as a scuffle begins, from what I can hear
" KORA?! KORA IS THAT YOU?! " Angie's voice of worry and happiness is the next thing I hear.
" Hey yeah, jeez calm down are you alright? " I reply back hopefully acting like I just didn't get done regaining my concious that Patrick had for the evening.
" Am I alright? Are you alright?! Where the fuck have you been?! " Angie cuss stings slightly.
Yeah, she was pissed.
" Y-yeah Angie I'm fine. I...went out to brunch this morning. Where have you guys been? " I try to play off cool as possible.
" Why haven't you answered any of out calls Kora? " Kristina cuts in suddenly into the conversation and I have to remember what I was going to say, making an awkward pause. The pause broke from the ding of the elevator opening to the lobby door.
" I.....My phone died at one point last night, and I haven't turned it on....until now..."
A pause. A very long pause. The kinda pause where they believe what you say or they know your lying. I can feel myself holding my breath until an long exhale gives me permission to breath.
" Jesus Christ Kora do you have any idea how fucking worried we were? " Angie says and exhales in relief once more. I look out as I enter the street, its still quiet as the city slowly begins to wake up.
" I'm sorry Angie. I'm really sorry " I say. And I really mean it. Another scuffle is begin with the phone until I hear Pete again.
" Come over to my place, think you can do that with giving us another disappearing act? " I smirk and nod my head thinking he can see me.
" Yeah I can do that " I reassure Pete and yet another exhale and the line goes quiet.
I drop my phone back into my purse and look towards the sky.
Thank Jesus. No, Thank Patrick. My skyward eyes land on Patrick window and I smile, feeling my heart flutter and my breathing hitch. And just like an instinct I feel my phone receive a text message.
I didn't recognize the number.
But I knew it was him.
Before I open it, I hail a cab to take me home. The smell of the city cab wakes me up even more from my adrenaline high as I give my address to the driver.
I finally look at the text and smile, the driver notices
" Have a fun New Years? " he inquires, peeking back at me from his blurry mirror.
I smile, reliving the events through my memory,
" It definitely was a great way to start the New Year "
"
