Dark clouds covered the sky as the smell of oncoming rain began to fill the air. On the ground, a group of cats walked closely together. A ginger she-cat who was up front surveyed her surroundings as she abruptly stopped, causing the others behind her to stop as well. It didn't seem what they were looking for was going to be nearby any time soon. It didn't help that the trees blocked their view in nearly every direction. If they were just the size of the bareskins, they might have had a better chance.
The rain finally started to pour down onto the travelling cats. It already coated Dragon's pelt and made her feel heavy. Unfortunately, they had nowhere else to go or hide from it. They were deep in a forest where everything was strange and unfamiliar. Yarrow, their former Ghost Whisperer, had fallen ill with an unknown disease during a war that forced them out of their home. With her last dying breaths, she had told Dragon and a few other cats to search for a home that touched the sky. But with only the knowledge of heading north, it was extremely difficult locating their new territory. It didn't take a genius to know that this wasn't the place.
A white tom, followed closely by a dark grey tom and a reluctant white she-cat, walked towards the ginger she-cat as their paws were coated with mud. "Dragon," he spoke indignantly. "Do you even know where you are taking us?! It has been three moons, and there has been nothing!"
Dragon's ears flicked with annoyance at the confrontation. She turned around to face the arrogant white tom. "Cloud, I am merely following the directions that Yarrow gave us before her passing. Do you even remember what she said?"
After a few more seconds of waiting for an answer, Cloud still didn't reply. Dragon nodded her head slightly in triumph. She then turned her gaze to the other two who had not spoken. "Shade, Snow, what about you two? Do you remember?" They both shook their heads and that was all Dragon needed to see.
Cloud's eyes gleamed with anger as Dragon turned around to continue the search. It was no surprise to Dragon, however, that he hated her. He was a raging sexist who was only showing any decency because too many had died during the journey during his time of pathetic guidance, if one could consider it guidance instead of a failed attempt at becoming the sole leader of the group. If Cloud really wanted to, and knew he wouldn't get reprimanded for it, he would have killed her.
A voice, one familiar to Dragon, suddenly meowed aloud, causing everyone to turn to them. It was a smaller dark ginger cat, about kit age, with his blue eyes round with awe as they stared beyond some unknown trees. As more cats collected around the kit, their eyes rounded with awe as well. Dragon walked towards the commotion to understand what was going on while Cloud was yelling at everyone to stop dilly-dallying and continue walking.
Cats instantly stepped aside to let Dragon through and her amber eyes flicked from cat to cat as she tried to understand what they were looking at. Once she reached the young kit, he looked up to her with his blue eyes shining bright. "Mama! Look at that big...thingy over there!"
Dragon followed her son's gaze towards a massive structure between the trees. It was mostly grey and green, but the top was coated with white. Only by speculation did Dragon guess that it must have been snow. How could I have missed that?!
Although disappointed for her having missed the sight, she felt immeasurable pride for her son having found it. She swiftly nuzzled the ball of fluff as she congratulated him for the discovery.
Cloud, Shade, and Snow finally joined them, albeit Cloud had a bit more difficulty as the others didn't show him any form of respect. Cloud looked towards the structure.
"Surely that can't be it. It doesn't even touch the sky!" he growled with scepticism. "You all have to be fluffbrains to believe such nonsense!"
Shade eyed Cloud with suspicion. "It's weird that you make that a point without even wanting to check."
Cloud turned to Shade angrily. "I'm telling you that is not our home!"
"You just want to return to power!" Shade rebuked bitterly.
Cats from all over the group began to argue until Dragon yowled for silence. She looked around with frustration all over her mind. "You all are acting like two-moon old kits! Cloud, Shade, you both used to be leaders of the Oak and River Tribes respectively. Act like leaders! Now, for me, I'm just your guide as I am the only one out of the five cats who were there when Yarrow died that bothered to remember what she said, or lived long enough to even be a guide! Now, as your guide, we are going to that large structure, and we are going to find out if that is our true home! Understood?!"
Everyone remained silent, even Cloud, and that was all Dragon needed. She beckoned for her son to follow her for once. She walked towards the structure and everyone else slowly followed. She didn't know what awaited them there, but she knew it had to be the place. It had to be their new home. She took another glance at her son. He seemed happy being next to her, and it filled her heart with pain that she hadn't been able to be with her son for two of the three moons they had been travelling. But now things could change. They could find a home and find peace. She can be with her son once and for all.
