I looked blankly around my desolate apartment, once again I had just come home from a 9 hour shift at the small coffee shop down the street. I was exhausted but I felt as though I couldn’t fall asleep in a million years. I began scrolling through my phone looking for something to distract me from the fact that in less than 12 hours I’d be back behind the counter and serving drinks to the same people who have been coming in for years. I sighed, rising from the couch and moving to the table. If I can’t sleep I should at least get some writing done. I opened my computer and stared wordlessly at the last sentence I had written.
‘The body lay there covered in roses the same color as the blood that flowed around it. The eyes of the young woman had been shut as if her killer had known her and had cared for her. She looked almost as if she was asleep.’
I was stuck 4 chapters in and I was already getting writer's block. I ground and put my head down on my keyboard. However when I laid my head down I must’ve clicked on something by accident as a video started playing. I looked up, it was another ad for a dating app. Some app called Search Mate. Apparently it used your search history to pair you with someone with similar search history. It was interesting, interesting enough for me to consider it for a good couple of seconds before realizing it was dumb and closing the ad and going back to staring at the lines in which I had written, but it got me thinking maybe I do need someone new in my life. Maybe it would be good for me but who really knows.
