Victoria ran down the hall in her leather armor and her sword in hand. Other students stepped out of the way as she ran. She'd only been in the place for a week and had managed to be late to her classes every single day.
Even now as she ran down the hall and fell face first and hard. She let out a frustrated growl before getting up and running again.
If dad could see me now, she thought. He'd take one look at me and say where the hell did my kid go.
She ran breathlessly out to the training yards and stopped beside Ophelia who pretended not to acknowledge her.
"You're late." Ophelia whispered. Victoria acted as if nothing were out of the ordinary and as if she was on time.
"I know," she replied.
"What were you even doing? How can you be late to every single class?"
"I was sleeping, back home its seven am." Victoria spoke in a whisper. Ophelia let out a scoff.
"Stop milking that cow." she grumbled. Victoria let out a small huff before focusing on Theseus's lesson. Victoria still found it hard to believe that his good deeds got him a sweet deal with the gods that made him immortal, considering that he fell into despair and got murdered by his friend.
He only taught combat, but still. It was really hard to believe.
"For the record, I was sleeping." Victoria retorted. Ophelia rolled her emerald colored eyes.
"You're so much like your father." she mumbled. Victoria inhaled deeply before stepping on her best friend's foot harshly, ignoring as she let out a quiet yelp.
"Daughter of Ares!" Theseus shouted catching her attention. The group of students stepped out of her way.
"What's up?" she asked. Theseus used his arm to motion to the ring where Jason stood. It didn't take long for a rivalry to be established between the two. It seemed set in stone. A son of Hermes and a daughter of Ares were destined to be friends.
He knew how to push her buttons. He pissed her off consistently and because of a lack of training, her attacks did next to nothing. It did sort of help that Theseus assured her that one day she would be the greatest woman warrior since Hippolyta. It didn't help that his cousin killed Hippolyta and brought her to him to be Theseus' wife and mother of his child after developing what can only be described as Stockholm Syndrome. But anyway, Jason was smarter than she believed and that created a problem considering the only battle strategy that she'd acquired so far was basic instinct which most demigods already had. But according to Prometheus, her own instinct, if she were to listen to it, would make her stronger than the others.
"If you can't pay attention and be in class on time, then you can fight." Theseus spoke. Victoria said nothing as she walked toward the ring. A slight annoyance glinting in her eyes. The ring was really just a circle in dirt. Jason sent her a smirk that even she knew held mischief.
"Nice of you to join the party. I wonder, did you find a son of Aphrodite?" he teased as he leaned against the wooden pole meant for prisoners should a threat ever reach the school. Protection against the school was taken to the extreme. It was in a whole new realm created by the Olympians for the sole purpose of keeping the demigods safe, but even a new realm wasn't enough, so the barrier was put in place.
"I wouldn't talk if I were you. Hermaphroditus wasn't a son of Ares." she quipped as she took her sword out of its sheath. Jason glanced to Theseus and back to her, with a slight roll of his eyes.
"Look, I'm not a jerk. I won't fight you if you're not ready for it." Jason spoke. Victoria furrowed her brows.
"Are you taking pity on me?" she asked him. She heard the whispers from the class. But she didn't care.
"No. How bad would it look if I, of all people killed you? I mean, the daughter of the best friend of Hermes' dying at the hands of his son. I don't know about you but that screams war of the gods to me." he replied. Red flickered in her eyes, something she inherited form her father.
"So, you're a righteous man? Granted the mission of keeping peace among the gods?" Victoria sassed. They circled each other like sharks, but the truth was that they were worse.
"You're on a roll today, Victoria. If you're as good with a sword as you are with your mouth, then I'd say you've achieved miracles."
Combat was much more than a physical fight, you had to be able to manipulate your opponent and force them into rage, it is of both mind and might.
Victoria swallowed her rage. Unfortunately for her, Ares was quite well known for his rage, it would only be in due time before she let loose. They watched each other. Not close enough though. His stare was enough to make Victoria swing first.
He dodged the attack without even breaking a sweat. Which now meant that Victoria would have to dodge his attacks and win the fight without a weapon. Which for some time, she did successfully until his elbow struck her back and his foot was stuck out in front of hers causing her to fall in the dirt.
"Do you yield?"
Trust your instincts.
And she did. She waited for precisely the right moment before sweeping her legs under his feet and jamming her knees into his back and pinning his arms down with one hand while the other forced his head into the dirt. She didn't know that she had unlocked her powers through her rage. She, like everyone else, didn't know that her eyes were glowing a blood red.
"I think you've won, Victoria." Theseus spoke. She let go of Jason and stood up, even offering him her hand. Though it was made clear that the rivalry wasn't over. Theseus handed them both their swords.
It was her first victory at the school and yet, she couldn't bring herself to think of it. She could only think of the voice in her head that made her believe in herself.
