The evening air was filled with mirth and holiday cheer, carried by the chilly winter wind throughout the streets of Death City. Despite the cold, crowds of students made their way towards the famous skull shaped academy and up its infamous ungodly stairs in formal attire, though some did decide to wear some of the most gaudy and cheesy Christmas sweaters you'd ever lay your eyes on. The reason? Lord Death decided the best way to mark the start of the new year and commemorate their diverting of the end of the world was a huge winter themed shindig; a gathering to celebrate new beginnings, overcoming adversity and the perseverance of the human spirit, and of course, friendship.
To make sure everyone was feeling included and accounted for, Death decided to hang near the front entrance of his beloved academy with a few of the teachers to personally greet his students.
"Hello hellooo! Welcome, welcome! So very glad you all could make it!" the boisterous god of the dead boomed happily, waving his comically large hand to acknowledge every individual to come through the doors. Death was greatly enjoying seeing the many smiling faces and hearing the weapons and meisters' own greetings, some just as expressive as his was, he was glad everyone was, seemingly, ready to have a great time, and shed the stress from perilous times earlier in the year.
While he was still energetically saying his "Hi"s and "Hope you enjoy yourselves!!"s, the large shinigami took the time to think about how much his students had been through, even the ones that hadn't been able to join in the final battle against Arachnophobia. They all put their lives on the line time and time again in the pursuit of self improvement and upholding of justice within the world. Death sometimes found himself wondering if he did the right thing, making the academy open to such young individuals, especially when some get cut down in the prime of their lives. Death then reminded himself that the alternative could be far worse; it was far better to take them under his wing while they were young, to hone their skills for good, instead of letting them stray into evil and the allure of a fearless life; besides, when he saw their bright expressions and all the self sacrifice and upstanding character behind them all, knowing he would have most likely never met all of the wonderful and brilliant minds if he hadn't formed the academy convinced him fully that it was the best decision he could've made.
After the waves of arriving students died down to a trickle and then eventually stopped altogether, Death excused himself from the entrance of the school to join the facility and the student body in the ballroom. Once he entered, he made a course towards the podium set up near the front of the room, making sure to dish a few more jolly greetings and "Howdy doody"s on the way, when he finally got there he politely borrowed the wine glass of a nearby teacher and tapped a spoon against it to get everyone's attention, though his looming presence did most of the job for him. "Hellooo everybody, I just want to start off by giving a great big thank you for everyone attending our little get together!" Death allowed a few moments of applauding and cheering before continuing. "I'm so grateful to all of the hard work everyone put in, not just in setting up the festival, but in your everyday lives; whether it be bravely facing your missions, diligently studying in the classrooms, or molding and guiding the next generation of meisters and Death Scythes, you all give ooooone hundred and ten percent of your effort in everything you do and I couldn't be prouder!" Again, Death paused for dramatic effect and to let the tumult of even more cheering and clapping die on its own. The shinigami took an extra moment to survey the crowd before him; if he could smile he would be grinning from ear to ear in pure elation. "I mean every word of it, you're all my pride and joy! I'm so very grateful to have met you all and I look forward to seeing the great things you'll accomplish in the new year!" Death raised the commandeered wine glass to the sky "To the academy, and to the wonderful, courageous people who make it work, in other words, to you, one and all!" for a third time wild cheering, even louder than the first two times, rang through the ball room as students and DWMA facility raised their drinks or their empty hands in agreement and celebration, and yet again Death allowed the din to continue and die out in it's own time, which took considerably longer than before, not that he minded.
After silence reigned once again, Death returned the borrowed wine glass and clapped his large goofy clown hands together happily before announcing loudly "Now feel free to relax and have fun, and don't forget to enjoy the punch, buuuuut don't get too carried away ho ho!"
With that, the DWMA winter-new year festival was in full swing.
