Chapter 4: The Price of Powers

Twinpaw's POV

The black cat crept toward the young apprentice in front of them. The tom seemed to ignore all of the cats surrounding us as he turned to her.

"What were you thinking, you ignorant furball!?" He hissed at her. Taking a leap forward, he nipped the apprentice on her shoulder. My fur bristled in anger at his actions. How dare he hurt her! I thought to myself. No matter what an apprentice does, they shouldn't be punished like that!

Shaking myself back into the present, I see the current shape that the cat is in. She had scratches running across her whole back. The spot the older tom bit was beginning to bleed. Without thinking, I leaped in front of her right as the tom brought his unsheathed paw down. His claws raked across my side. I let out a hiss of both pain and anger.

"What's the meaning of this?" A booming voice yells into the clearing.

Icykit's POV

Everyone freezes as the voice of our leader erupts into the clearing. Even the blood seeping out of the the bite the black tom gave to the apprentice seemed to stop dripping.

"Blackhawk! Why are you here?" Said Oceanstar as he walked up to us. Under his angry gaze, the tom who turned out to be named Blackhawk, seemed to shrink.

"I just came to fetch my troublesome apprentice, Rabbitpaw." He said, motioning to the cowering apprentice peaking from behind my brother. I felt a surge of pride at Twinpaw for protecting her.

"I-I fell off a cliff!!!" Rabbitpaw suddenly burst, Oceanstar and Blackhawk opened their mouths but no sound came out.

"Its true!" Lilycove burst "Echopaw just swooped down and grabbed her just before she hit the ground!"

"Lilycove do you expect me and Blackhawk to believe that nonsense ." Oceanstar snapped causing Lilycove to shrink before him.

"I have to stand up for Lilycove, she is right. Icykit's sister, Echopaw, has wings." Riverfern said gazing at Oceanstar with her calm green eyes.

"Thats right! My sister- she can fly!" I burst out.

"We have no time for this 'winged cat' problem. Come on Rabbitpaw." said Blackhawk as he and Rabbitpaw bowed their heads to Oceanstar. As they began to leave, Rabbitpaw suddenly burst "I'm so sorry for all the trouble, I promise to never do this again! And Echopaw?"

"Yes? What is it?" said Echopaw as she gazed at Rabbitpaw with her piercing lavender eyes. Rabbitpaw fliched as she saw how weird Echopaws eyes were but she then said "Thank you for saving my life, I owe you," and with that the mentor and the apprentice walked away.

Echopaw's POV

It was awkwardly silent as we walked back to camp. I was about to say something but then Twinpaw suddenly yowled in pain and tripped falling face flat into the ground. That broke the silence as our mentors burst out laughing and Oceanstar was clearly trying to stiffle a murrow of amusment. "Hey you guys! This isn't funny! Echopaw, Icykit, you have to help me!" Twintails whined showing that his two tails had become knotted up. After seeing such a sight, I couldn't help it, I started laughing and Icykit was purring so loud I thought that the earth would shake. "No fair you guys!" Twinpaw pouted as we finally got back to camp when suddenly I was filled with rage. How come I have to be the only one with powers? It's done nothing but trouble. I feel as if I'm getting farther from Twinpaw and Icykit.

"Uhh, Echopaw are you ok, you seen a bit...mad?" Icykit looked. "No, i-its nothing. I'm JUST fine." I growled as I walked back to the apprentices den leaving my littermates wallowing in confusion.
