It’s cold, dark and the wind is lashing at your window. You didn’t want to be home alone tonight; but your mum had an important meeting meaning you had no choice. Not even your lap top and iPod are providing you comfort. Your lap top beeps at you, stating you have an incoming Skype call. Sighing, you answer it, forgetting the fact that your hair is a mess and you’re in an oversized hoodie. It’s Niall, your best friend. Grinning at you, he waves cheerily, and you immediately begin to discuss the day at school you’ve had; when suddenly there is a large crash outside. Helplessly you scream.
Niall: what’s with you?
You: There was a bang.
Niall: It’s just the wind (YN)
You: I know, I know, I’m just jumpy.
Niall: What time is your mum back?
You glance at the clock on the mantel piece.
You: Past midnight. Maybe I should just…
You don’t get to finish your sentence; there is another loud bang, and then you’re plunged into darkness as the power cuts out. Niall is laughing at you.
You: It’s not funny, Niall. I am so scared.
For a moment he is silent, and then he glances away.
Niall: I’ve got to go.
You: What? No. Don’t go, please. Least till the power comes back.
He shakes his head, and the screen goes black. How could he do this to you? You’re scared, alone and your best friend can’t even talk to you. Eventually, the power comes back on, but you are past the point of no return. Every creak or slight scuffle has your heart beating erratically. So, you retire to bed. Drawing the duvet over your head and praying that sleep will come quick. It doesn’t and you watch the digital display tick around. When suddenly your phone begins to ring. Rolling over, you stare at the display. Niall.
You: I am so not talking to you…
Niall: Let me in.
You: What?
Niall: Let me in.
You scamper from the bed and run down stairs. Niall lives over 6 miles away; and there are no buses at this time of night. How had he gotten here? Yanking open the front door you stare at him, bike resting against his thigh.
You: You biked all the way over here!
Niall: Yep.
You: Why?
Niall: You were scared. I don’t like that.
Stepping aside you let him in, laughing as he places his ice cold hands against your cheek.
You: Thank you.
Niall: You’re welcome. I’ll go anywhere you need me too.
