Mike was on my left, Dustin on my right, and Steve was lying across the three of us as I tried to stop some of the bleeding. I'm really regretting letting Max drive, but we had no other option. Steve started to wake up and tried touching his face, I told him not to, and Dustin tried calming him down, "it's okay. You put up a good fight. He kicked your ass, but you put up a good fight." I laughed, and Steve started waking up a bit more and realized that Max was driving. He looked at me as I was the one putting a bandaid on his head, "why the hell aren't you driving?" I scoffed, "she's fine. She's driven before." I lied, and Mike said, "yeah, in a parking lot!" I looked over with a 'not helping' look. Steve started to panic, and Max just accelerated. We hit a mailbox as we swung left, and everyone in the car was screaming. We continued to drive toward the tunnels, and I tried to calm Steve down. We arrived, and Steve fell out of the car, arguing that we shouldn't be doing this. Everyone but Steve, Dustin, and I headed for the tunnel; I grabbed the bag that had Steve's bat from the trunk, "I know you promised Nance you would keep us safe. So keep us safe." Dustin finished his speech, and I held out the bag to Steve. He sighed and took it reluctantly. We wore bandanas as masks and goggles over our eyes as we walked into the tunnels. Hopping down the hole dug earlier, we all looked around at how dead everything looked.
Steve took charge and led the way while I was in the back, ensuring I could see everyone. We made our way through, taking a few turns here and there. Dustin stopped walking, and I stopped next to him, something above us spit out what looked like spores, and we both started coughing uncontrollably. "Oh shit! Gross! I think some got in my mouth!" I kept coughing and spitting out whatever the hell that was. The others came running back to make sure we were okay. We both regained our breath, then looked up at the others, "we're okay." We just said plainly. "Jesus, it's like their twins." Steve said, "come on, Dev, act like the older sibling every now and again." I just looked at him, confused and a little offended. They turned away and started making their way down the next junction. I stood up and helped Dustin, then pushed him along so we could catch up. We walked a little further and made it to the hub, which connected everything. "Let's drench it," Dustin said beside me, and we all started pouring gasoline over every inch of the walls and ground. We stepped back towards the tunnel we came from, and Steve took out his lighter, "let's light this bitch up." I smiled; Steve panted, "I am in such deep shit." He flicked the lighter and threw it at the ground. Everything started to burn, and we all turned around and raced back the way we came. Steve kept looking at the map, and we continued to follow. Mike suddenly fell and was grabbed by one of the vines, "Steve! The bat!" I yelled, and he ran over and started hitting the vine with it over and over until Mike was free. Once we made sure Mike was okay, we heard a growling behind us, one of the demo dogs, no... Dart stood in front of us. Dustin started to walk up to him, and everyone argued for him to stay back, "trust him!" That was all I said amongst the yelling. He took off his goggles, and Dart seemed almost docile. He started talking to him like he was just a regular pet dog. Dustin opened up a three musketeer candy bar and placed it in front of Dart, he slowly started to eat it, and Dustin motioned us forward. Dusty and I said our goodbyes to Dart and continued on our way out of the tunnels. The ground started to shake, and we could hear the demo dogs running toward us. We again raced towards the exit. We found the rope that led out and were able to push Max, Lucas, and Mike up above ground, but before Steve, Dustin, or I could climb up, the dogs were almost on top of us. I grabbed Dustin and covered him so he would be protected if something happened. When we saw them, though, they continued running past us, like we weren't even there. "Uh, Dev, I'm safe; we're all safe." He said, and I just gave him a quick pat on the head and moved to make my way up the rope. Once we were all above ground again, the car lights suddenly shone brighter than anything I'd ever seen. They died down, and my terrible gut feeling was gone.
One month later
Dustin was helping me set up Christmas lights when we heard the news report that the Hawkins lab had been shut down. Thank goodness. A little later, I was helping him with his hair, doing it the way Steve had told us on the tracks. The doorbell rang, and Steve was our ride. I would have driven us, but my car was still getting some repairs. Once we got to the school, I was getting ready to hop out of the car when Steve stopped me. "Hey, Dev." I looked at him, and I had one hand on each front seat; Steve looked down at my right hand, which was still in a cast. "That was a pretty sick punch you threw at Billy." I laughed, picking my hand up and examining the cast, "yeah, I get more badass every time we save the world, huh?" He rolled his eyes and looked at Dustin. I thanked him for the ride and made my way inside. I saw Nancy and walked over. "So we're operating the punch station, are we?" She laughed, then nodded. Dustin walked in a few moments later and said hi to Nance, "what, your own sister doesn't get a hello?" He laughed, "I just saw you, Dev.. but hello." I nodded, and he made his way toward his friends. I grabbed a trash bag and made a few rounds collecting empty cups. "Hey, zombie boy. Wanna dance." I looked over to where I heard the voice, and a girl was asking Will to dance. Why would she use such a disrespectful name to address him? Kids are the worst. I continued to clean up a bit and saw Dustin try to ask a few girls to dance before he made his way to the bleachers. I returned to Nancy, "hey Nance, I'll take over if you don't mind checking the bleachers for me." She looked a bit confused and then saw Dustin sitting by himself. She made her way over to him. They talked for a moment, but then she grabbed him, and they started dancing. He looked so awkward; it was cute. I poured a few cups of punch, and a few minutes later, I heard the door open and saw El walk in; she looked charming. I'm glad I offered her to wear one of my old dresses. She walked up to Mike, and they headed for the dance floor and started dancing. I poured a few more cups and started singing along to the music. Saving the world twice in one year...was exhausting.
