I began preparations quietly for the vixen. Despite my broken heart, I found the highest quality items for a concubine of a nobleman, and decorated the room myself. Since I normally had nothing much to do, this filled my time substantially.
But since our discussion and agreement a bit ago, Pei Xuwen and I have grown somewhat closer. It's more of a cooperation than anything, but I think his respect for me has grown.
"Husband, I saw a good fabric that I think will look good on you. Should I have it made into a robe?"
"Whatever you think." He would say casually.
Then I asked the servants to take his old measurements to save time and prepare the robe. Little did the servants know that it was to be his wedding night robe.
I also sought him for Wu Lan's measurements, "Come to my place tonight and I will show you some fabrics I found for her." I spoke softly, so as not to arouse the interest of any who may be listening.
And so he sent me off, but came to my place later in the night.
"Greetings husband."
"Where's the fabrics?"
"Ah, over here. Yizhi, bring the fabrics." I motioned to the girl on the side who quickly brought out some clothing that was not quite the red of an official wedding.
"These two are very popular right now," I paused, pointing to two fabrics, one with internal stitching of peonies, and another with sheer pieces, "Husband, which do you like best?"
He looked a little confused, probably thinking they all looked the same color, "Just choose one of those two then."
"Okay." He turned around to leave but I pulled softly on his sleeve. "Will you stay here tonight?"
A long pause ensued, followed by him closing the open doors.
He spent the night at my place very quietly.
In the blink of an eye, two months had passed since our talk. It was now time to ask for Old Master and Madam Pei's blessing for Pei Xuwen to marry a concubine. While I loathed this part, I let Pei Xuwen lead me.
"Father, mother. I have discussed with Lexin and decided to bring in a concubine. Please give us your permission." We were both kneeling politely on the floor to show sincerity.
"Lexin, is this true?" Old Madam Pei looked in disdain at her son before worriedly trading looks with me.
"Indeed, mother."
"Then, is the girl here?" The older woman looked expectantly at the both of us kneeling.
"Yes, mother, she is waiting outside." Pei Xuwen said softly, before saying louder, "Lan'er, enter."
A petite young woman with dazzling features walked in cautiously before standing behind me.
"Come here, let me see your face." Old Madam Pei beckoned, but Wu Lan delayed, looking at Pei Xuwen and I nervously before slowly coming closer. Discomfort was seen on both of their faces as mother saw the beauty of this little woman.
After a long moment of silence, Old Madam Pei continued. "Fine. As long as she is but a concubine." She chided and finally looked back at me, "Make sure she stays in line."
"I understand mother." I bowed my head.
Old Master Pei really didn't say or do anything during the short experience, keeping silent as the matter concerned the inner yard, but his face betrayed some disappointment. At least that's what I assume his expression meant, grimly staring at his son during the whole meeting.
