"This is" Toby Grinned.
"Yeah." Jim chimed In
"Whoa." Toby Grinned even wider.
"Pretty much." He chuckled.
"This is your home? Trollmarket is home and hearth and sanctuary for all good trolls." Blinky Smiled. "This way, my friends, There is much to see."
"Damn! And here I thought the only thing underneath our town was dirt and plumbing." Toby Replied.
"Stay close. Human feet have never graced the ground of Trollmarket before." Blinky Said proudly.
"Human?" A Troll said in panic, holding a weapon at the ready.
"Friends." Blinky Said, the troll put his weapon down.
"This is crazy! Are you getting this, Tobes?" Jim Grinned.
"Oh, yeah. On it." Toby groaned."Hi!" The troll cashier handed him jewels."Check it out! Peridot, Topaz, Cassiterite!" Toby gasped. "Kornerupine!" The cashier growled."Hi." He waved to another troll.
"Your knowledge of minerals is almost troll-like, Tobias." Blinky Smiled.
"So, your kind, you all live here?" Jim Asked.
"Trolls travel from afar to our market to find comfort and remedies. You'll find most anything you need and sometimes you'll find what you never knew you needed."A gnome growled.
"Oh, hey, little guy! That's a cute pointy hat. And pointy teeth!" Toby Grinned, looking at the gnome.
"Look out! Get away! Get out of here! Vile vermin! Be gone!" Blinky growled.
"What is that?" Jim Asked, pointing at the Gnome.
"Gnomes are vermin. Pickpockets, scum of the earth! We only tolerate them for their grooming services." Jim looked at him with an arched eyebrow.
"Grooming?" He Asked.
"They eat the parasites on the larger trolls." Blinky explained, A gnome suddenly screamed.
"Jim! Jim! Check it out! Maximum coolness there." Toby called
"Look at that." Jim Smiled.
"It's amazing!" Toby Smiled,
"This is Heartstone, The life force of trollkind." Blinky Said, pointing up at the large reddish orangish crystal. "The means that keeps us from crumbling to stone and the source of light and sustenance."
"Okay, that's totally the most coolest thing I've ever seen." Toby shrieked.
"What are humans doing here?" Asked a Troll. "Fleshbag!"
"Puny!" Said another. "I think we've attracted the paparazzi."
"They're Friends, there is no need to be afraid. He is the Trollhu-." Blinky raises his arm.
"What is this?" Said a troll with a golden arm.
"I was just getting to that, Draal." Blinky Replied.
"Human feet have never sullied the ground of Trollmarket before. Who are these fleshbags?" Draal Asked again.
"Believe it or not, he is, um How do I put this? Our new Trollhunter." Blinky Said, all gasped.
"He can't be the Trollhunter." One shrieked.
'He's not a troll!" Another yelped.
"The Amulet chose only Trolls for centuries, why would it change now!?" One roared.
"Try to remain calm, Destiny is always just!" Blinky Said.
"Show him, Jimbo!" Toby Grinned.
"For the power of Merlin." Jim sarted to say, Blinky stopped him in mid sentence.
"It's Glory." He Said.
"Right, sorry." Jim bit his lip. "For the glory of Merlin, Daylight is mine to command."
"Pretty cool, right?" Toby Grinned, some gnomes whimpered.
"A human? Protecting us?" Asked a troll.
"Bushigal! I am Draal, son of Kanjigar and the amulet's rightful heir!" Shouted Drall.
"Draal, wonderful to see you as always." Blinky greeted, Draal didn't shake one of his four arms. Instead he glared darkly.
"Uh, you're his son?" Jim Asked, getting closer to Draal and Blinky.
"He's his son?" Blinky Replied, Others gasped.
"Yeah, I can see how this could be a problem." Jim Replied.
"When my father fell, the honor should have passed to me." Draal growled, Jim's eyes widened in fear of him.
"Amulet chose." AAaarghhh Said.
"We'll see what Vendel has to say about this." Blinky Said to Draal."Feel free to fetch him, In the meanwhile, lots of Trollhunter business to be done." Draal walked off in the opposite direction of Blinky, Toby, and Jim as they went to meet Vendel in his large tower of majesty.
"Whoa! Wh Whoa! Um, what just happened?" The Amulet was spinning out of control once again.
"The amulet responded to your unconscious command, Master Jim." Blinky Replied."You are at ease, are you not?"
"I am, actually." Jim Smiled."It senses that?"
"You are beginning to master it." Blinky Smiled proudly.
"Holy trolls! Is this a palace?" Toby Grinned, Blinky Grinned.
"This is "The Hero's Forge."" Blinky raises his hands up high, the others took in the view of gold spires and towers jotting out of each end.
"Ooh." Toby laughed, he then walked away from the group to an edge to look down. His legs started to wobble, Jim turned around once he heard him scream. He ran to him to pull him away.
"Don't do that again! Now Come on." Jim Replied, they followed Blinky up a golden flight of stairs when they saw hieroglyphics on the walls.
"Magnifico!" Toby Grinned.
"Wait, are these?" Jim Asked, pointing at one.
"Trollhunters." Blinky Smiled. "Your predecessors, Master Jim. A line of heroism that reaches back to the age of Merlin. This is the place of the final repose for Kanjigar the Courageous. One day, there will be a statue of you here, Master Jim. One day very far off in the future, of course." Jim's eyes widened, with new sight of responsibility. Just one thought was creeping in the back of his mind.
"Yeah, about that, there's just one thing I'm not getting." Jim Replied.
"Just one?" Blinky Said, interested.
"You guys are trolls."Jim sighed. "So, "Trollhunter" sounds a little like you hunt yourselves, you know? Because you're hunting bad trolls."
"Gumm-Gumms." AAaarghhh Said.
"Not exactly the most terrifying name." Jim sighed, his eyes half open.
"In Trollspeak, "Gumm-Gumm" means "bringer of horrible, slow, painful and thoroughly-calculated death."" Blinky Replied.
"Oh." He Said in new shock.
"But do not be too concerned, Master Jim. The Gumm-Gumms were exiled to the Darklands centuries ago." Blinky Said.
"Only one roams free, And wants to kill you." AAaarghhh said somberly.
"Wait, So Bular is one of the unspeakably evil trolls?" Jim Said, shocked.
"Indeed." Blinky Said just as sadly. "His father and the rest of their number remain exiled to the Darklands, but they have been trying to escape for centuries. I sense ill times are upon us." Jim's eyes widened, even Toby stopped to listen. "Hence the need for us to begin Master Jim's training now. Step back, please." The door came after them. "A little further, Tobias." Toby hid behind Jim."Oh, very well." They both screamed. "There's a big blade!" They then jumped through and found themselves in a hall of weapons and a throne at the end. One large axe came towards Toby's head.
"Oh, no!" Toby screamed, Jim swung his sword and ducked.
"Excellent reflexes, Master Jim." Blinky Grinned, Toby continued to scream."Great, but maybe we could start off easy? Like, you know, with less grindy things?"
"Blinkous Galadrigal." Spoke a male voice.
"That's your name?" Jim tried to hold back a snigger.
"Horrible, I know." Blinky Replied.
"I wish to meet the fleshbag supposedly chosen by the amulet." The troll said. "For I am Vendel, son of Rundle, son of Kilfred."
"Uh I'm Toby, son of Ralph. I live with my mom." Toby Replied, Jim rolled his eyes.
"Produce the amulet, Trollhunter." Vendel Said, holding out his hand.
"Oh, no! My phone!" Toby backed away
"I think I'm the fleshbag that you're looking for." Jim stood up to face him, Vendel chuckled.
"Amulet chose." AAaarghhh Said.
"Hmm So Draal tells me. Ridiculous! However, the amulet has been known to make ill-fated choices, as you know better than most." He sighed.
"What's that mean? Blinky Said He trained a Trollhunter before." Jim Asked.
"He trained Unkar the Unfortunate." Vendel sighed.
"Why is he unfortunate?" He Asked AAaarghhh.
"First night out, torn." AAaarghhh Replied sadly.
"Like, conflicted?" Jim Grinned worryingly.
"No, Limb from limb." AAaarghhh put his arms in a snapping motion, Jim yelped.
"If the amulet chose true, the Soothscryer will reveal it." Vendel Said.
"Please! Master Jim hasn't had even an hour's training." Blinky Replied.
"Mm-mm!" Jim Chuckled nervously, the amulet dinged.
"Behold, the Soothscryer! It will judge your true spirit." Vendel Said, Soothscryer was large and massive. Jim wanted to run away."Insert your right hand, Trollhunter."
"Um, I'm going to get it back, right?" Jim Asked.
"That is part of the test." Blinky Said.
"Oh, great. Tobes, Tobes! Come here and help me." Jim called to Toby.
"Okay, Jimbo, but I am not sticking my hand in there." Toby ran to him, They both grunted. Toby screamed,"I'm okay!" He sighed."Ooh, everything hurts."
"Well? What is it?" Vendel Asked.
"Hmm Inconclusive." Soothscryer Said.
"Wait, wait, wait, What does "inconclusive" mean?"
"It means, Trollhunter, that there's never been a human to bear the mantle before. The Soothscryer needs more time to render its judgment." Vendel explained."Let us all hope you live long enough to see." They bowed and left his presence down the stairway back to the Trollmarket. They crawled up to the surface, there seemed to be no sign of Bular. They got on their bikes and rode to Jim's.
"Oh, what have I gotten myself into?" Jim mumbled.
"Um trolls, cool underground city, indigenous gemforms, Heartstone? What you've gotten yourself into is total awesome-mania, man!" Toby Said pumped.
"If I survive." Jim sighed.
"Come on! You're going to get trained by the best." Toby Grinned.
"Blinky's last guy got torn limb from limb on his first night!" Jim sighed, Toby was starting to know where he was coming from.
"So, there's nowhere to go but up." Toby joked. "Oh, no! Looks like your mom's home."
"Okay, quick, I was bike-jacked by three no, make it seven members of the Bratva." Jim Replied.
"That's the Russian mob. And then, you broke into their hideout to try to save me Or I could tell her your bike got hit by a car, but you're totally fine." Toby suggested.
"That works too, I guess. Night, Tobes." He left the house and Jim started to wash the dishes, he turned on the water and let it run a bit. Then the dishes clattered.
"Jim!" His mom yelled.
"I'm in the kitchen, Mom!" Jim called.
"Oh, man. You would so not believe what happened on the way home from Look who stopped by." She Replied.
"Who?" Jim Asked.
"Mr. Strickler." He turned his head in shock, he started to speed up cleaning the dishes."he came by to congratulate you."
"Oh, that's really nice." Jim Said nervously.
"It's a great honor that you've been chosen to wield this mantle.I've no doubt that you'll prove equal to the task." Mr. Strickler Asked.
"Of?" Jim Asked. "Maybe we could back up a few steps?"
"Why didn't you tell me you were trying out for Romeo and Juliet?" She Asked.
"Jim, surely you knew you'd won the part of Romeo after your breathtaking audition yesterday." Mr. Strickler grinned.
"Yeah, after the audition, I had to run, but Wait, I got the part?" Jim Asked.
"I was just remarking to your mother that I'm a touch concerned about your being spread so thin, particularly in light of your new commitment to the chess club." He continued.
"And I didn't even think you knew how to play chess." She laughed."Chess, acting It's like you have this entire secret life I know nothing about." 'You have no idea.' He thought to himself.
"Atlas, too, carried the weight of the world on his shoulders, and I'm concerned, like him, you're overextending yourself."
"I can handle it." Jim Replied.
"A few days ago, you were falling asleep in class." His mom gasped.
"Wait, what?" She Said.
"Oh! Yeah, but-but-but now I am recharged and ready to go." Jim Said.
""To be or not to be." Right?" Mr. Strickler raised an eyebrow, Jim Chuckled.
"Right? Am I right?" Jim gave an unsure smile.
"Jim, that's Hamlet." He sighed, Jim Chuckled.
"Right." Jim grimaced.
"I don't want to overstay my welcome. My phone number, Mrs. Lake." Mr. Strickler Smiled.
"Please, call me Barbara." She blushed.
"Barbara, Delighted to finally meet you." He Smiled, he bowed and went out the door to his car and drove off.
"He really seems to like you." Jim Chuckled, trying to hide anger building inside of him.
"Yeah." She shut the door. "I've never seen a teacher take such an interest before, And he has a point. There are only so many hours in the day, Jim. If your grades slip, even a little, I'm going to insist you cut back, starting with the things you do for me." She Said.
"I like taking care of you." Jim Replied.
"Except it's my job to take care of you." She Said worriedly.
"Do you know when I was old enough to ask about Dad, remember what you told me? You said, "We just have to take care of each other." That's all I'm doing, Mom." Jim Replied sternly.
"You must be starving. How about breakfast for dinner? Even I can't screw up an omelet." She chuckled.
"Wouldn't be so sure." Jim mumbled.
"What?" Barbra Asked, Blinky mumbled from behind a tree bush outside, the window was open.
"I said, "Sure!" You shouldn't be here!" Jim growled.
"Why aren't I feeling his neck snap in my hands right now? Burning his hut to the ground?" Jim scoffed.
"That certainly wouldn't draw any attention." He rolled his eyes.
"I could take the amulet and be done with it." Blinky Said."Your attempt to do so earlier was not only unsuccessful, it risked exposing our agenda to both humans and trolls." Vendel snarled.
"First human Trollhunter." AAaarghhh Said.
"This will require finesse, patience. I resent your weak, devious ways, Impure." Vendel snapped.
"I only respect force." Blinky Replied.
"And I respect your father." Vendel Said crossly."If you want any chance of ever seeing him again, adapt." Blinky sighed, Jim sat down on the table and started to eat with his mom.
"You know, that's actually pretty delicious." Jim Smiled, chewing the food.
"So, Mr. Strickler, he seems very nice. Is he single?" Barbra Smiled.
"What? I-I don't know." Jim Replied, A siren was blaring in the distance. He turned around alert.
"What is it honey?" She Asked.
"I gotta go!" Much to her surprise he got up and left, he rode off on his bike to Trollmarket.
"Wider stance. Keep your frame." He broadened his chest. "No, that's good, that's good. Yes, all right, fine. That's better. All right." Blinky Smiled. "Raise your sword, Master Jim. Mm-hmm." He held up his sword with one arm, imagining he was a knight or a superhero of some kind.
"Head up, chin out, stomach in." He nodded. "The Trollhunter lives and dies by three rules. Rule number one: always be afraid." Blinky Said.
"Afraid?" Jim Asked confused.
"Be afraid." Blinky repeated.
"Fear is good. It's what Keeps us alert. Keeps us on guard. Makes us vigilant. A hero is not he who is fearless, but he who is not stopped by it." Blinky advised.
"Yeah, I don't think that'll be a problem." He Chuckled to himself.
"Two: always finish the fight, An opponent must be given no mercy." Jim gasped, Toby laughed.
"Always finish the fight?" Jim grunted.
"Kill! The Trollhunter must vanquish his opponent through death." Blinky Said, Toby stopped laughing.
"Dude, that's harsh." He Said.
"Ours is an unforgiving world, Toby D." Blinky sighed somberly.
"Ah! So, the Trollhunter's training begins. I thought the great Trollhunter might accept my services as a sparring partner." Soothscryer Said. "Part of your training regiment, isn't it? In due time, perhaps."
"Why wait? I am eager to see your charge demonstrate his mettle." Vendel sighed.
"Actually, the sword's more made of, like, daylight." Jim Replied.
"He means your mettle, your ability to cope in the face of adversity." Blinky corrected.
"Oh. Yeah, I'm still working on the whole "mettle" part. Plus, you know, SAT words." He chuckled.
"Let them spar, there's no harm in it." Vendel Said.
"Wait, what do I do?" Jim Asked.
"Hit him as hard as you can." Blinky Said proudly.
"No, no. I mean, what do I do? I've never hit anyone." Jim Replied.
"Ever?" Blinky Said surprised.
"I've never gotten into a fight." Jim Said.
"In your entire life?" Blinky was even more surprised.
"All 15 years of it, yeah." Jim sighed. "So what do I do? This?" he swung his sword with newfound strength.
"Your blade-work was impressive." Blinky Grinned.
"Those were actually just my chef skills!" Jim Replied.
"Exactly! The fight is within you, Master Jim. Trust yourself. One hit! One hit and you will be changed forever. Begin." Blinky Said, Soothscryer snarled. "One hit and you will change forever." Jim yelled and groaned.
"All right, all right. Now, just give me a second here." He yelled again, He started to breath heavily. Draal grabbed Vendel by the feet.
"Let him go!" Jim Yelled.
"I've waited my entire life to inherit the amulet. I can wait until you fall in battle." Vendel screamed, Jim groaned. "I suspect I won't have to wait very long. If you know what's good for you, you'll stay down and live, worm." He laughed.
"Trollhunter."Jim sighed.
"He might be right. What the heck was I thinking? An amulet can't choose anyone. It's an amulet." Jim growled angrily,
"Jim? I understand you're upset, Master Jim, but you've had not a moment's training. There's no shame in what just transpired." Blinky Replied.
"Okay. Well, then you were definitely not paying attention back there. Shame was about the only thing that transpired.
Shame." Jim sighed."and realization. I don't know if Draal should be the Trollhunter or not, and I don't care.I just know that I am not."
"Master Jim, despite whatever doubts you may have about the amulet's choice, it is now bonded to you. This is a mantle you cannot refuse." Blinky pleaded.
"Oh, shut up." He exhaled, Blinky let him alone to think. He groaned and started to weep silently. The next day Jim walked down the hall when Claire spoke to him.
"We're on "Deny and refuse."" She said.
"But Romeo can't not be a Montague, which means that Juliet - "And I'll no longer be a Capulet."" Jim Said.
"Exactly!" She laughed. "Jim?"
"Huh?" Jim looked at her.
""Or, if thou wilt not, be sworn my love" Right." She Said.
"No, I-I got it. Love, deny, refuse. I'm on it." Jim Said, he then spaced off.
"Okay, then. Let's take it from "Wherefore art"" she turned to him and saw him looking somewhere else. "You okay?" She Asked.
"Yeah, I'm fine." Jim chuckled. "Totally fine."
"You're going to need to be a bit more convincing if you're going to play Romeo." She Smiled.
"I've just got some stuff going on in my head." Jim Replied.
"I know we don't know each other all that well, but we're going to be spending a lot of time together, so let's move on to Act two, scene two, line 33. "Wherefore art thou, Romeo?""
"Where have you been? I scheduled your butt-whooping for yesterday, jerk face. And you didn't show. Tick-tock, remember?"Steve Yelled.
"He was busy getting his butt whooped by someone else. Take a number." Claire scowled.
"Back off, girl!" Steve gave a big grin.
"Steve, I am really not in the mood to do this right now." Jim Said.
"Duh! Nobody's ever in the mood to get their face bashed in, but that's what's going to happen, unless you want to back down." Steve Yelled.
"Uh, I-I can do that? Sure." Jim pretended to be afraid, Claire was confused.
"You want to crawl away from me, on your knees, bowing in front of everybody?" Steve Chuckled. "That's a choice." He bowed low, the students murmured. "Whoa! I didn't expect you to actually choose wussing over whooping." Steve laughed. Jim looked up with a smirk and jumped from behind him, he had his arms folded in his back. As he tried to punch him he turned his head very quickly.
"Keep still so I can punch your face!" He groaned, The Amulet dinged. "Stay down and live, worm." Steve laughed. "Is that all you got?" He growled.
"Leave him alone, Steve!" Claire shouted.
"Get back! Claire!" Jim Said, Steve laughed.
"Good thing your mom's a nurse." Steve Said, Jim heard Blinky's voice in his mind 'One hit.' It Said. His bones cracked.
he punched him underneath his chin, Steve fell to the ground and his tooth fell out of his mouth.
"She's a doctor, actually." Jim Replied, the students cheered.
"Dude, you did it!" Toby Grinned.
"I was going to kill him, but I just couldn't make up my mind as to how." Jim laughed, back at Trollmarket Blinky talked to Vendel and Draal.
"Trollhunter." Vendel scoffed."I mean, "trollhunted" is more like it." He laughed.
"If only Master Jim had landed a single hit. One single hit." Blinky Replied. "And he would have been changed forever!" Vendel laughed.
"All I want is the chance to wail on that fleshbag again." Draal growled.
"Wish granted, loudmouth." Jim walked in the doorway."Rematch, You. Me. Name the time, name the place, and I'll be there." Jim pointed, Draal growled.
