Kenzie
I walk into the studio to see Richelle. I came early so I could get a chance to talk to her.
"Hi."
"Hey Richelle. I thought you would be here."
"Yeah I usually am. Why? Do you need something?" She asks, tilting her head.
"No, but we didn't get a chance to talk about the alternates. I was wondering what you think of Lily being back. Well obviously I know what you think, but what should we do?" I sit next to her in the middle of the floor.
"I'm not sure yet. We have to respect Emily and Nick's decision, but we can try talking to Lily. See what got her to come back," she suggests.
"Okay. We should probably do that. But I found a workshop Miss Angela is hosting. I thought you and I should go." Richelle looks up from the floor at me.
"What will we do? Emily will get angry if we if she finds out."
"We won't do anything wrong. We'll go to learn some tips from a successful dance teacher, or well formerly successful, and maybe we will find a moment to talk to her. You know just catch up, see how she's doing."
Richelle smiles. "Sounds great. When is it?"
"We can leave after rehearsal. I can drive."
"Perfect."
Miss Angela seems like the type who would enjoy talking about herself. If we can have a conversation with her, we might get her to spill something interesting.
Soon enough, the rest of the team shows up, including the new alternates. I'm still wary of Lily, but I can't show any any of that anger. I've got to bottle it up.
"Ok everyone get in position for our group dance. Our two alternates can observe before learning."
Everyone gets into their spots. The routine still isn't solid, but that's to be expected.
We finish rehearsal and I walk with Richelle out of the studio. I've been meaning to talk to her about the new girl.
"So what's with Lola? Why'd Emily let her back on the team so easily?" I ask, as we walk down the street.
"She's a good dancer and Emily knows she's loyal," Richelle replies.
"Ok." I still think it's weird that Richelle's so okay with some random girl getting a spot on the team and not a B-trouper. But I suppose they're friends, and Amy technically did the same thing. "So is something up with you and Jacquie. You seemed upset when I mentioned her yesterday."
Richelle straightens. "No not really." I raise my eyebrows at her. "We aren't talking," she admits.
"Why?" I sigh. Something always seems to be happening with those two.
"We had an argument."
"So why won't you call her?"
"I'm sick of calling her, I want her to call me." I bet Jacquie would give me the exact same reason.
"Maybe you should send her a message. She might be waiting for you to say something," I advise. I'm great at giving advice.
"Maybe. I guess I could, if she doesn't say something soon." I smile, I've done it again. They'll be on good terms in no time.
"So how are you? Anything interesting happening in your life?" Richelle asks, smiling. I look at her, she seems genuine.
It's kind of surprising. Nobody at the studio really wants to talk to me about anything other than dance. I guess when I think about it I don't start conversations about things that aren't dance.
"Oh not much. Just dance and school like always," I respond, watching my feet as we walk down the sidewalk.
"What school do you go to? I've never asked."
"Riverside high school. How about you?"
"Woodlands School For Girls."
"You go to an all girls school? Is it some fancy private boarding school?" I snort.
Richelle stiffens. "No. Well it is private, but that's not important. And it's fine being at an all girls school."
"Ok, I'm not saying it's not. I bet it suits you. Ugly uniform and all," I say, sending her a smile.
We make it to Miss Angela's studio and find her outside the building.
"What are two star dancers doing at my studio?"
Miss Angela hugs us both in turn. This is weird. Really weird.
"Come on in, I'm holding a workshop," she says, going back into the building. I share a look with Richelle before following.
There's no one in the studio, we're the first ones to arrive.
"Where is everyone?" I ask.
"You two are the first to arrive. The only ones to arrive actually. Turns out no one wants to attend a workshop from a dance teacher on probation."
I'm starting to feel a little bad. She really thinks we're here for her workshop.
"We didn't actually come here for the workshop." We still have a plan, I don't know why Richelle is doing this. Hopefully she'll still tell us something.
"Oh."
"Did you send Lily to spy on us?" Richelle asks.
"No no. I sent Lily to The Next Step, but not to spy on you. Lily loved being at The Next Step, who would I be to keep her away from that?"
Miss Angela actually sounds genuine. The more I think about it she has no reason to sabotage The Next Step, she doesn't even have a team competing at Nationals. Maybe they've changed. Both of them.
After saying our goodbyes, Richelle and I make our way back to the studio.
Richelle and I approach the members of A-troupe that are in The Next Steep (Piper, Amy, Finn, Henry, and Summer).
"Guys we went on a fact finding mission. We were able to talk to Miss Angela about Lily."
"Is she a spy?" A few ask, in response to Richelle.
"Miss Angela doesn't have a team. She's been banned from competing at absolute dance for the whole season." I see the shock flit across everyone's faces.
"If Miss Angela sabotaged us, she would sabotage Lily too."
Richelle voices exactly what I've been thinking since we left that studio.
"She can't sabotage her daughter," Amy says.
"Exactly. I think Lily really wants to be here," I respond. I was skeptical of Lily at the beginning, but I think she wants to be a part of the team.
"We have to find a way to make her feel included. We've basically been ignoring since she got an alternate spot. Maybe we should all go do something after rehearsal tomorrow and invite her," Summer suggests.
"We could as long as no one's busy," I agree. It would be a good idea to start getting along with Lily. If we are going to win Nationals we need to start acting like a team.
"Ok. Well if that's sorted I'm going to go now. I'll see you guys later." Richelle leaves the table.
"I should go too," I say, following her out.
I go to the locker room and get changed. I head back to the studio to dance. I start to rehearse my solo.
I need more practice time if I want at least one featured dance at Nationals other than the group routine. I've been placed in the back row for that, so I really need to prove myself.
I want a duet or a solo. Something big. I'm sick of just being in group dances, I'm a good dancer, a really good dancer, and I'm going to prove it.
First Kenzie chapter!!!
I've done some rearranging and I've changed a few things in the previous chapters and I think it makes more sense now.
