What am I doing anyway?
That's the question I keep asking myself. She has Daniel, and her family and her friends. So then why can't I leave her? I only wanted to see her again for a moment, but then I ended up staying with her while she slept, and I'm still here now. My thoughts are interrupted by Daniel asking her "So, I know this is short notice and things have happened, but I was wondering if maybe you wanted to go see a movie?"
Evelyn stares at him blankly before her gaze turns into a glare. "Are you kidding me?" She asks him, she's obviously furious. "Cmon, I just want to get your mind off of it." Daniel says, I'm pretty sure he's just trying to save his ass. Evelyn scoffs and gets up from the table before she's even finished her food. "You really don't know when to quit." She says, after that she walks to her room and slams the door.
Now I'm the furious one.
Are you telling me that he's been trying to get her to go on a date or god knows what for god knows how long? How could she not have told me? I feel betrayed, hurt and angry. All of the feelings I thought I'd be free from since I died are flooding through me. I see red, and the next thing I know there's a plate flung against the wall and it shatters.
Did I do that?
Daniel screams when the plate shatters, parts of it fly across the room from the impact but one piece gets particularly close to his head, just barely missing him. To be honest he deserved that, should it have happened. And yes, yes, I know. I shouldn't be wanting him dead but from my point of view it doesn't seem so bad. But then again he's staying with Evelyn to make sure she's okay, so I shouldn't kill him. I couldn't do that to her.
Speaking of Evelyn, she walks out of her room and sees the remains of the broken glass plate scattered on the floor and looks at Daniel. "Did you do that?" She asks him. "What? Hell no. I think your place is haunted." He says. "Way to blame it on a ghost." Evelyn says, she walks over to the shards and picks them up carefully.
I guess I did do that.
Daniel tries saving his ass again saying things like "What reason do I have to destroy one of your plates?" Evelyn ignores him before finally saying "Because I didn't date you." And walks back to her room, slamming the door yet again. Okay, now I really want him dead, but I have to control myself. I can't let something like that happen again. Daniel finally gives up and just lays on the couch, presumably to take a nap.
I guess I'm a poltergeist...
•a week later•
Evelyn and Daniel are on a date.
That's right, a date. Daniel kept asking her for 5 days before she finally gave in and said yes. I hate the guy but if he's one thing he sure is persistent. They're having a picnic in the park under a tree. They already watched a movie in the theater, which wasn't too bad. Now I'm just waiting for the moment my heart breaks into a million tiny pieces. "Are you feeling better?" He asks her. "Yeah, thanks." Is all she says back.
Then he makes his move.
Daniel shifts closer to Evelyn, and she looks at him. They're so close, I feel like I'm gonna be sick. But then Evelyn moves back, and says "no Daniel, don't." And he stops in his tracks. He looks at her with a somewhat unreadable expression on his face but it's clear as day. He's hurt, maybe a bit betrayed, even a tiny bit mad. "I get it. I'm sorry." Is all he says in return and he stands up. Evelyn looks just as hurt, if not more. I can't blame her, since I died not too long ago. "Cmon, let's go home." Daniel says, reaching his hand out to her.
She refuses and stands up on her own, already making her way to the car and leaving him by himself to clean up the leftover from the picnic. "Wait!" He calls after her, she stops and looks at him, waiting for a response. "Can we forget about this?" He asks. She pauses for a moment, considering it. "No." Is all she says in response.
•when they return home•
Evelyn walks to her room, once again leaving Daniel alone. This time though, he doesn't try and stop her. He returns everything from the picnic to it's rightful place within the house, and makes his way to the couch. I decide to leave him be and check on Evelyn, I can't imagine that was easy for her. I reach her room and pass through the door, one of the many perks of being a ghost, and it's just as I suspected. She's laying on her bed crying, hugging the picture of us to her chest.
It's times like these I wish I could do something, but deep down I know I can't. So instead of moping about it, I act like I can. Isn't that better than nothing? I lay on her bed next to her and cuddle her like I used to, she was always the little spoon. It's taking everything I have not to slip through the bed and onto the floor or even lower since I'm a ghost, but this is well worth it.
And then the most peculiar thing happens.
She stopped crying. She turns over, and it's so unreal to me I think I'm dreaming in the afterlife. "...Alex?" Is all she says before she closes her eyes, drifting off into sweet sleep from an exhausting day. I can't believe it! She said my name! But wait... she doesn't know I'm here... does she? These thoughts consume my last waking moments before I fall into something similar to sleep, sweeping me away from both the mortal world and the afterlife.
