Momo looked out her window with glazed, sable eyes. Glancing over nothing but green. She thinks that the view from the tower is warped, at first the encompassing height of her tower made her nauseous, but it was something that anyone could get used to if they have lived there for their whole life. The girl notes that it was finally night time. Rows and rows of pinewood forestry were captured by her perception. Depressingly, the princess lays her head on the stony windowsill, giving in to the temptations of her conscience. She consciously neglects her nighttime duties to reflect upon her evening.
The day had come and gone. There was nothing quite memorable about today compared to yesterday, and likely even tomorrow. The work that needed to be done was often carried out by either her or her caretaker. It was boring, but consistent. Predictable, but safe. A saying that he always repeated throughout Momo's lifetime. But was it really unfair for her to wish for more? Sixteen or so years living in a confined space made one curious about the world outside. Sure, the warnings against the wilds were surely justifiable, but wouldn't she be allowed to step outside for just a little bit?
Sometimes, Momo wished for a world where she wasn't raised in a tower. She was grateful for her caretaker and wouldn't trade the safety and comfort(?) he's given her for the world but somehow, she thinks she was made for more.
Silently twirling a shorter string of her hair, Momo indulges herself in the fantasy of discovering life outside this tower.
Oh, a world where she could fall into the leafy greens of the forest feeling true freedom. The feeling of wind racing through her hair as she runs through the muddy trenches of the terrain below. A world where she was allowed to go in and out as she wanted, without fearing the dangerous beasts below.
If only there was something in her mundane, vapid life that could give her the adventure she yearned for.
If only the fear of the unknown would dissipate.
If only...
As she ponders about what her life would look like outside this tower, a familiar creature of avian kin takes upon itself to perch on the free space next to her head.
Seeing her little bird friend had always made her worries temporarily disappear, even if it was only for a brief moment.
"Tokoyami!" Raising her head and swiping her long, silky black hair out of the way, she properly greets her winged companion. The crow, to which Momo had happily christened "Fumikage Tokoyami," was probably her only friend at this point in time. Tokoyami chirps a pleased symphony as Momo offers him an apple slice from a bowl; she proceeds to whistle back as a response.
Call her crazy and all, but she really thinks that Tokoyami can understand her. One time, she noticed that he was quietly observing her gazing upon a field of flowers at some point last year in spring. She vividly remembers Tokoyami bringing her a pretty little peony from the bushes down below as a gift.
The serenity that she felt watching Tokoyami peck at his offering inspired a flurry of warmth to fill her body. If it wasn't for him, Momo isn't sure if she'd be able to stay mentally sane. Her thoughts of gratitude were interrupted by glugging noises as Tokoyami scarfed down the apple slice.
Ah, there he goes, she thinks, watching the raven gulp the remaining shards of the fruit down his beak. His presence alone added an element of unpredictability to these monotonous days.
However, the quiet of the tower was never held for long. And the reason for that was none other than the owner himself, who conveniently burst through the wooden door loud enough to make Tokoyami flap his wings in surprise.
"YAOMOMO! WHAT ARE YOU STILL DOING AWAKE!?"
A scream reverberated through the tiny tower.
"M-Mineta-sama!"
