Summer. It's the time of year everyone looks forward to. School's out, the weather is warm, late nights with beautiful sunsets, ocean swims and if all goes to plan this summer, that summer fling you look back on for years to come.
It sounds perfect in my head, only thing is, it's sounded like that for the last four years too. This year though, this is my year.
Christmas is done and dusted for another year, which means it's time for me to pack my bags and begin the real holiday's. Every year for the last four years my best friend Krissy's family have taken me in as their own as we travel down to Golden Bay for the summer. Four weeks of swimming, boating, barbecues and hot beach boys.
What about my own family you ask? Well, both my parents are workaholics and I'm the youngest by a good six years. A happy little accident my mother says. An unplanned oops, my two older brothers like to remind me, with love of course.
Like Kyle can talk, he has his own little oops running around these days. He knocked up his girlfriend when they were only 19, little Mia is the cutest little sasspot I've ever known though. So no one's mad. Luckily for me, Kyle also married Mia's mum, Maddie, so it's kind of like I have an older sister now too.
My other brother Luke is gay though, so no little munchkins will be coming from him anytime soon. In fact, he seems to have no signs of settling down at all. As I pack for Golden Bay, he is packing for Europe where he plans on staying for the next 3 months. Tear.
Luke and I are close, as close as you can be with an eight year age gap. Our parents weren't around, see above; workaholics. But Luke was here. I also had an au pair care for me until I was about ten, but after that, my parents decided I was too old and a lot of the responsibility fell onto Luke as the oldest sibling.
I'm sure you've worked out by now, maybe it was the au pair that gave it away, that we're quite well off. Sure we have a nice house, I go to an elite all girls school, and I'd be lying if I didn't admit to my parents thinking having nice things is a suitable replacement for their absence. It's not by the way, but it is what it is.
That's what I love most about Krissy's family. They are super close and act like an actual family, and they make me feel apart of theirs.
Let's fast forward to the now though.
"Ella Marie, are you all packed yet?" Luke practically sings as he comes waltzing into my room.
"How many times have I told you not to use my full name," I roll my eyes, turning from my full length mirror, where I was admiring my cute summer dress and glare at Luke instead.
"It's so much more fun getting that reaction though," he cackles jumping onto my freshly made bed.
"Luke!" I whine. "I just made that bed!"
"I'll fix it before mum see's it," he rolls his eyes. "Are you ready for Golden Bay? Or more specifically, seeing Ryder again?"
"I think I'm all packed, yes," I reply, avoiding his second question, but Luke being Luke doesn't let it go.
