"You have to know that all I'm imagining is the evil sea witch from The Little Mermaid whenever you mention her."
Evie lifts a brow with confusion. "The Little what now?"
"The Little Mermaid," I repeat, furrowing my brows as I look to her. "The film? I mean, I swear it was based off a book. And yes, it was released like fifty years after you were human, but surely you've heard of the book."
She smiles, still confused. "I'm not too sure. But this sea witch – she isn't evil."
I lean back on my hands, getting more comfortable. We're both sat at the dock's edge, my feet dangling in the water as her tail does the same. We were just chatting and enjoying each other's company when, somehow, we ended up on the topic of the sea witch that turned her into a mermaid. Unlike Evie, I'm bothered by her.
"Isn't evil, sure," I say sarcastically. "She only stole your life from you and let one of her own trick you into turning into a mermaid. Sounds like a top lady right there."
Evie shakes her head, being annoyingly nice. "No, Leila, it's not her fault I'm like this. She was only doing what she thought I agreed to."
I roll my eyes. "Would it have hurt her to do a final confirmation before casting the spell that turned you? Or whatever sea witches do?"
"She did," she defends weakly. "She asked if that was what I wanted. Riley, he– he must have told her something else before bringing her to me. The witch wasn't to know."
"Well, she still should have checked properly," I mumble, already disgusted at the mention of Riley.
"I know," Evie agrees quietly. "I think about that a lot, too."
Realising I'm not helping with my unwanted opinions, I glance over at her apologetically. "Sorry. I just– it's horrible. And I don't know, I guess I've been thinking about it a lot more lately... It's not fair that you got stuck. All because of the stupid balance of nature or whatever the reason was."
Evie smiles sadly. "Leila, I know. But it's not your problem to worry about. I've accepted it."
I appreciate her nonchalance about the situation, but I can't let things go so easily. And as of late, when I've found myself wishing Evie could just be on land, be around somewhere that isn't always here, I've been thinking about it more and more.
"He became human, so you had to become a mermaid," I say my thoughts aloud, making Evie groan quietly.
"Leila, come on, what did I just say?"
"Wait, I'm just–," I pause, looking to her. "It's about balance. Permanence. But what if you became a human again? Just for the day? Surely that's allowed since it doesn't disrupt the balance of anything because it's not permanent?"
I expect her to retort as she has been, silencing me because she's already thought of it, but her expression tells me otherwise and I widen my eyes when I realise I may be onto something.
"I don't know if that's how it works," she answers, though she seems uncertain, and that's enough for me to run with.
"Why don't you ask? I mean, it could work. You could be human again, Evie, just for a day. Just to see the world once more."
She could see her home again, revisit her town and see how it's changed. I could show her around, we could hang out somewhere other than the water. A whole day!
"I'm not sure I would want to," she says slowly, glancing at me.
"But you could see your home again," I say, turning to face her fully now. "It won't be the exact same, but you can actually step inside! And the town– it'll be so fun, Evie! There's so much I can show you!"
