I bring the bottom of my jersey up over my face. The sweat leaving a dry aftermath across my face. Our scrimmage today is running me up and down the field leaving my face burning from the heat and me drenched in sweat. We have a big game against Purdue this weekend and we need to win it.
"Rowan!"
I snap my head to the side hearing my teammate calling my name. She kicks the ball in my direction. I easily settle the ball with my cleat running in the direction to our goal. I pass it up to my left striker and she passes it up to our right. Our right striker shoots the ball into the goal. Meaning game. Our Coach, Carla Preston, blows the whistle. I release a loud breath gripping the sides of my jersey. Jordan, my roommate, teammate, and best friend, jogs towards me frowning. She was on the opposing team for the scrimmage.
"Y'all just got lucky," she says annoyed. I laugh wrapping an arm around her shoulder. Jordan rolls her dark eyes at me and shrugs me off of her. "Don't even try."
"I didn't shoot the ball!" I say in my defense. She rolls her eyes but laughs too as we jog towards the bench. Coach is going over plays with our assistant Coach, Tasha.
"You're so modest," Jordan says with an eye roll. I hip bump her and head towards where my water bottle is. Jordan and I were roommates freshman year because of us being on the soccer team. Since we have to come to school early for the summer training. Our schedule starts early August. She was the first person I met and we just clicked from the start. This year we have already had two games and our first day of classes is tomorrow. This is our first home game with everyone officially on campus. We get a pretty good crowd in the beginning of the season when it is still warm but then it kind of dies out.
I grab my water bottle from the bench and grab it. I sit down taking a long sip of water. I wipe another bead of sweat from my forehead with the sleeve of my jersey.
"You girls look good out there. I know we have a great shot at beating Purdue this weekend. Our starting lineup is staying the same as last week's game. If you don't start, that doesn't mean you won't play, remember that. Also remember we have lifting tomorrow at six-thirty sharp," Coach says, nodding her head at us. "Alright, I will see you tomorrow ladies."
We all stand up from the bench grabbing our water bottles and collecting the soccer balls from the ground. I grab my water bottle and a few staggering green Gatorade water bottles as well as a soccer ball. I turn around and take a double take.
No freaking way.
Easton Henderson. Wearing sunglasses over his bright green eyes and watching our soccer practice. I chew on the inside of my cheek nudging Jordan in the rib. She turns to me with raised eyebrows and I nod my head in the direction of Easton and he who shall not be named. I tap Jordan's shoulder and she flicks her long ponytail at me. Next to him is my ex. Jaxon Knight. In all his smirking glory.
Jerk.
"What?" she asks me. I speechlessly nod my head in the direction of Easton and Jax. She stands up straighter, narrowing her eyes at the two.
