Knocking lightly, you wait for Eddie to open his trailer door. Within a few seconds, the door is thrust open - almost knocking you over.
"Jesus Eds, you almost took me out!" you exclaim, laughing.
Before you could even finish your sentence, Eddie had turned around and walked back into his home, not uttering a single word.Hesitantly, you walk into the trailer, sighing when you see Eddie sitting in his usual space with his arms crossed and a stony expression on his face. Eddie has been your best friend for as long as you can remember, so you know instantly that he's in a bad mood.
"Um, are you okay Eds?" you ask tentatively.
His only response is to raise his eyebrows at you, pushing his tongue against his cheek, throwing daggers at you from his eyes.
"Eddie, c'mon. What is your problem?" you sigh, trying again.
Still - no response."Fine! I'll just leave then," you shrug, taking one step towards the door.
"No," Eddie says through gritted teeth. "You're late enough as it is."
That's when it hits you. He's in a mood because you were late. You got caught up in your study session with Chrissy, not even realising you were running late until it was too, well... late. You'd assumed Eddie would be fine with it, he's usually pretty chill. But, you were wrong."Shit, Eds, I'm so sorry! I didn't realise I was running late, I swear. As soon as I saw that we had overrun, I came here straight away." You give him a sympathetic smile, in the hope that it might soften him up.
"We? Who's we? What were you even doing? You could've been hurt for all I knew," he scolded.
"I was at Chrissy's? We had a study session?"
Eddie gives you a blank stare.
"I told you this earlier, it's not my fault you don't listen." You cross your arms, getting annoyed. You have no idea why he's acting like this. He's silent for a few seconds and you think he might be about to let it go and get over it. Unfortunately, it's not going to be that easy.
Eddie sits up slightly, his arms still crossed. "Your study sessions never overrun though."
He's not wrong. The only reason why it overran today was because Chrissy had a certain... visitor. One who kept distracting her, making it impossible to try and work.
"Well, it did today, so! I don't know what you want me to do about it. It wasn't my fault."
You and Eddie glare at each other before he pipes up once more.
"Whose fault was it then?" He raises his eyebrows, an almost triumphant expression upon his face like he thinks he's caught you out. You really didn't want to tell him about Chrissy's visitor but there's no way you can't now, not with Eddie looking at you so smugly."Jason's."
"Who did you just say?" Eddie's eyes narrow.
"Jason. Jason Carver. It was his fault." You shrug your shoulders as Eddie's mouth curves into a scowl.
He stands up, his voice low. "What was Jason doing there with you?"
"He's Chrissy's boyfriend, he was trying to distract her because he wanted to hang out with her. I was just studying." You're now having to look up at Eddie as he's standing a few steps away from you.He waits a few seconds, trying to find something to say.
"Why didn't you tell him to leave?" he finally asks.
"Um, maybe because it's not my house?" You look at him incredulously, you cannot believe how ridiculous he's being right now.
"So?"
"So. It's not my place to kick him out! I can't just say 'Jason get out of Chrissy's house, I don't want you here'. It's rude, Eddie."
"I would say that." He shrugs, still scowling.
"That's because you're you," you snap.
"What's that supposed to mean?" His voice raises for the first time, a trace of hurt hidden beneath his angry tone.Sensing his slight hurt, you choose not to answer. You didn't really have a reason to say that anyway, you were just retorting back in the heat of the moment.
"You could've just left." Eddie states plainly, his voice back to his normal volume, a menacing undertone still lacing his words.
"I needed to study."
He rolls his eyes, irritated. "You could've studied with me."
"You don't do psychology."
"It can't be that hard," he retorts stubbornly.
"Eddie. Please. You're not even passing Maths at the moment," you scoff.
"Hey!" Eddie points a finger in your direction. "That's not fair."
"Whatever Eddie, I'm fed up of this conversation now." You stand there, glowering at him, challenging him to continue.Suddenly, without warning, he leans forward, waving his hand in your face. "Hey." He clicks his fingers. "Hello?"
Taking a step back, you move his hand out of your face. "What are you doing?"
"Seeing if the real Y/N is in there." He's got a scowl on his face again; his eyes are still blazing with anger.
"You're such a child," you shake your head in exasperation.
"What!" he exclaims defensively. "The real Y/N, my Y/N, would never hang out with Jason willingly."
"I wasn't hanging out with Jason! How many times do I have to tell you, I was literally just studying!" You throw your hands up in annoyance. "And what do you mean my Y/N, I'm not anybody's Y/N. You're not even my boyfriend, so I don't know why you'd say that." As you say those words, you don't really feel upset that he called you his, in fact, it made your heart skip a beat and your stomach erupt in butterflies.Focusing back on the conversation, you see Eddie is quiet again. He opens his mouth a couple of times like he's debating saying something.
"Maybe I should be," he mutters, almost under his breath.
"What?" you ask.
"Maybe I should be your boyfriend," he responds, a light hint of red appearing on his cheeks.
"Huh?"
"Maybe I sh-"
"Eddie, I heard you. It just doesn't make any sense," you cut him off.
"What do you mean it doesn't make any sense? How could it be any more clear?"
"This is coming from nowhere, Eddie. That's why it doesn't make sense."Your best friend's words run round your mind over and over again. He doesn't really mean it, does he? I mean you've never spoken about being anything other than friends. Not that you haven't thought about it before, but that was just a silly thing you like to imagine from time to time. It wouldn't ever work in real life, would it?
"Y/N? Y/N! Please say something," Eddie interrupts your thoughts. You realise you had zoned out, not listening to what he was saying.
"Sorry Eds, what was that?"
He sighs, rolling his eyes once more, but this time there was less anger behind the action.
"I said, why does it have to come from somewhere to make sense? I'm saying it now. Maybe, there's a part of me that has always- err, y'know, liked you. I think that's why I got so upset tonight. Sorry, by the way," he laughs awkwardly.
"It's fine. Um," you pause. You have never been more confused in your life. A few minutes ago, you were arguing about Jason Carver and now Eddie's confessing his feelings for you? "I think we need time to figure this out. We should talk about it maybe when our heads are clearer. Then we can discuss the best way to go forward with-"Your words are cut off when suddenly Eddie's lips are on yours. Without even thinking, you melt into the kiss, your hands automatically entwining in his curls, as he places his loosely around your waist. Slowly, he pulls back. "Is-is this okay?" he asks, eyebrows furrowed in concern.
"Yes," you whisper, smiling before leaning back in. And you realise that it is okay. More than okay. Maybe it doesn't need to be figured out for it to make sense. Maybe you both fit together the way puzzle pieces do. Maybe it can work between you. There's only one way to find out.AUTHOR'S NOTE:
