But it started off like any regular summer— the constant spring rain came to an end and the puddles dried up, the notches on the themometres rose in altitude, the sun actually started coming out and you could practically hear the commotion from Starcout Mall even miles away. Bright colors and neon fluorescent decor took Hawkins by storm, blockbuster movies and melting ice cream became part of regular daytime routines, and it was actually kind of astonishing how fast the mall had been built over the spring.

But also how fast it came crashing down.

Lori Philbin graduated high school. A day she never thought would come, realistically, but it snuck up on her anyway and she was swept off her feet in the arms of Steve Harrington. They'd graduated together, walked across that stupid stage and gotten their stupid diplomas and waved it in everyone's stupid faces. It all happened so smoothly, so easily, so comfortably. She'd always been scared of college and graduating high school, but somehow with Steve, he made the whole thing simpler. She wasn't really scared about the future next to him. That's probably why they hitched a part-time job together that summer— and the whole thing really started to shape up after that.

For a while she was happy, really happy spending her summer days slinging ice cream with Steve and another— very likeable and totally hilarious— shmuck, Robin Buckley. Her and Lori spent their time happily making fun of Steve for the way his hat ruined the swoop of hair, engaging in general assholery during quiet hours, conjuring up stupid conspiracy theories over ice cream when no customers showed. Lori was having the time of her life, really, during the first month of summer— sneaking into the backroom with Steve half of the time, leaving shifts just a little bit early to sleep over at his house, looking for colleges, staying up to watch the sunrise and then driving to work together the same morning— it was all just perfect. She had two good girl-friends, Steve, and Dustin who showed halfway through summer. It was all perfect.
