Reincarnation, also known as rebirth or transmigration, is the or concept that the non-physical essence of a living begins a new in a different physical form or after biological . is a similar process hypothesized by some religions, in which a soul comes back to life in the same body. In most beliefs involving reincarnation, the soul is seen as immortal and the only thing that becomes perishable is the body. Upon death, the soul becomes transmigrated into a new infant (or animal) to live again. The term transmigration means passing of soul from one body to another after death.

In areas of the world where reincarnation is accepted, one can identify three forms of pre-natal and/or post-mortem identity: the continuing self/soul, the dissolution of the self, and family identity. Comparable concepts within the contemporary West might be labelled modern, postmodern and kin-based.

How many lives or how many combined years does it take to break the reincarnation cycle?

Around 100 lives. But 'breaking the cycle' isn't the way to think of it. It's like asking, how many years does it take to break the cycle of studying at university?

Each stage of reincarnation is a process of discovering and becoming more conscious of who and what we are through our relationships and interactions with each other in the realm of physical separation. Each lifetime is set up to experience our own existence from a particular 'angle' in relation to others. For example, one life might focus on living a quiet life in the woods, another might focus on being part of a tight-knit family, another might focus on being politically active.

According to the Michael teachings, there are seven phases of soul evolution, of which the first five are normally accomplished through reincarnation — from Infant soul to Old soul:

Infant soulBaby soulYoung soulMature soulOld soul

It normally takes at a minimum seven lifetimes to complete a single stage, each serving a valuable lesson. In reality, most lessons are not fully learned in a single lifetime but are repeated 2, 3 or 4 times. There are also lifetimes in which we incarnate for reasons other than our own evolutionary progress, e.g., to enjoy some leisurely R&R after a particularly heavy life, or to support other individuals in their own evolution. Hence, it typically takes around 20–30 lifetimes to complete each stage of soul evolution.

To complete all stages of reincarnation, from first life as an Infant soul to the last life as an Old soul, usually takes around 100+ lifetimes. Some take fewer, some take many more. In terms of time, it all takes about 5,000–10,000 years.

It actually doesn't matter how many lives or how many years it takes, however. Evolution isn't a race, and contrary to what many teachers say, there is no merit in evolving quickly, nor is there any imperative to do so. The physical world isn't a prison to be escaped from as soon as possible. Life isn't a terrible mistake. The cycles of reincarnation are not chains to be 'broken'. Time has no meaning.
