Deku never knew how deeply he loved.
But he does. He loves so deeply that he puts his entire heart into every kiss, his soul into every hug. He'd buy Bakugou little gifts to celebrate their milestones-- something ever4y month until one year, and then every six months.
Bakugou meant so much to him. They'd met back in middle school, only classmates at the time. Bakugou was in a relationship with some other boy, one that Deku didn't know of. Deku, himself, had found himself in a few relationships, though none of them lasted more than a couple months. They'd grown apart until summer break after freshman year of high school, where lance found himself with a beautiful boy in his dms.
Deku had messaged him on Instagram, remembering the class they had together all those years ago. They'd talk for hours every day, revisiting old memories of each other, and making new ones. Texting eventually turned to calling, which turned into facetiming, which turned into plans to actually meet up. They met at the mall one random Tuesday.
Deku led the other from shop to shop, his smile never leaving his face. At one point, he'd felt bad for dragging Bakugou around, and asked what he'd like to do. Keith replied with "watching you enjoy yourself is enough for me to be happy." With his heart full of joy, Deku brought them both smoothies, and then headed to the arcade. They played lots of games, against each other and on the same team. Deku won Bakugou a figurine with a claw machine, and then they headed back to the blonde's place to put it together.
Bakugou lived with his older brother, Eijirou Kirishima. They lived in a two bedroom apartment two blocks away from Bakugou and Deku's high school, and a ten minute drive from Kirishima's university. That apartment housed the two teens often, the place filling with laughter every time Deku came over. Kirishima was glad that Bakugou had found a friend. But, Deku wasn't just a friend. The kisses the two shared together signified a romantic relationship between the two, and Deku was sure he'd found the one.
That was, until Sophomore year rolled around. After pressure from his brother, Bakugou joined the football team. Deku, himself, was on the dance team, so he got to watch Bakugou play often while he waited for half-time to perform. Deku loved watching Bakugou play football. He seemed so happy, running around with his friends. He even found himself attending some of his boyfriend's practices, bringing him iced water and a snack. Deku would ask Bakugou to join him to the nearby coffee shop after the other's practice, and of course, he always agreed.
Or, he did, until...
"You look worn out,"Deku chuckled, handing Bakugou his water bottle.
"I hate cardio days..."the blonde grumbled, taking the water and squirting it into his mouth from ten inches away. He wiped his face with his arm and handed the bottle back to Deku. "Thanks."
He nodded, a small smile on his face. Deku stuffed the water bottle back into the backpack he'd brought. He'd always had a backpack with him when he went to watch his boyfriend's practices. Its where he kept the water and snacks, as well as his wallet to take the other on dates. "You ready to head to the coffee shop?"
Deku was in a good mood, until he heard the hesitation in Bakugou's voice when he mumbled "Uhh..."
He looked up at Bakugou, confusion written in his eyebrows. "Kacchan? You didn't forget our date, right?" He laughed nervously, to lighten up the mood. When Bakugou looked back at his teammates, who many were standing in a group, watching the two, Deku realized.
"I... I'm sorry, babe, I told the guys I'd go to their sleepover tonight." he rubbed the back of his neck, apologetically or nervously, Deku wasn't sure.
"Oh.. well, cant you just head over after our date? Its matcha day at the café."
Bakugou's double take back at his friends answered Deku's question before his words did. "I'm sorry, Deku, but the guys wanted to go get sandwiches. But I'll see you tomorrow at school, okay?"
"Okay..." he whispered as Bakugou kissed the side of his head. He watched Bakugou go join his friends, who all smiled at him and patted his back. As the group walked away, Deku felt a little bit of his heart chip away.
He went to the coffee shop anyways.
This new behavior from Bakugou became the usual. Deku would try to spend time with his boyfriend, but Bakugou would always be busy with sleepovers and parties that his friends threw. While the blonde was out with his friends, Deku was laying in bed, writing in his journal, and trying to convince himself that nothing was wrong.
Except, of course something was wrong.
He realized it when Bakugou forgot their six-month anniversary. He realized it when Bakugou ditched him on Halloween for his friends, even though he'd promised Deku that they could go together. He realized it when Bakugou didn't plan anything for valentines day, and then had his friends over that day after Deku had left.
Deku was losing Bakugou , and he wasn't sure what to do.
Eventually, Deku agreed to give himself up to Bakugou. Its not that he didn't want to, he did. Deku just found it boring. Painful. Bakugou didn't know how to do things properly, and Deku was too nervous to correct him.
He had tried to talk to Bakugou on multiple occasions about how he'd like to spend more time with him. His boyfriend hadn't even realized that he'd rarely see Deku during the week. He'd said he'd try to be more aware.
Well, he wasn't.
It continued, until eventually, Deku found himself talking to other people.
He wasn't cheating. Those other people knew he was in a relationship, and Deku wasn't sending them any pictures. They were just... talking.
And it stayed just talking, until Deku realized that these people that he didn't even know were giving him more attention and affection than his own boyfriend was.
That's when he started to come to terms with the end of his relationship. And Bakugou was completely oblivious to it.
Deku lost count of how many times he'd called his friends, crying over a boy who didn't even know how much he was hurting. He'd had given his whole being to this boy, and he'd received sparse "goodnight" messages in return.
Then, Bakugou got sick. He was out of school for two weeks. And Deku, well, that was the first week he'd gone without crying since their six-month mark. He hadn't realized how much stress and anxiety he felt while he was around Bakugou. Every time he looked at the other, he was reminded of how he was just his second option; his backup when his friends weren't around. Of course, Deku felt bad that his boyfriend was sick. But he couldn't help how comfortable he felt at school again.
Then, Bakugou came back. Deku was hoping that the two weeks apart would have reminded him how important Deku was supposed to be to him. But Deku wasn't the first person he went to when he could be with people again. The night Bakugou was feeling better, he had a big sleepover with all of his best friends, and Deku hadn't been invited. That was the final straw.
The next day, he felt so uncomfortable around Bakugou, that he had to walk away during lunch. Bakugou didn't even go after him.
That night, Deku called his boyfriend and broke up with him.
The next month was full of dread and tears. Bakugou hadn't said anything but "Okay" when Deku broke up with him. Delku couldn't go on social media for weeks after, because whenever he saw Bakugou's face, he'd break down into tears. He completely isolated himself. He didn't hang out with his friends, he didn't eat meals with his family. Summer came around again, and Deku would open snapchat, but because the yearly memories would always have Bakugou, he'd cry. He'd cry over how it'd been a year since he'd felt that happy. He'd cry, and ask the universe why, what he'd done to make Bakugou not love him anymore.
His heart was shattered into a million pieces, and Bakugou had taken his soul with him when he decided his friendships that didn't even exist outside of football were more important that a boy that gave him his all; a boy who treated Bakugou like he was the most amazing person in the world.
Deku never knew how deeply he loved, until a single boy drained all of it in one year.
