In the cold forest I had taken refuge, clutching at my head and controlling my breathing, the bandits were right behind me, throwing bullets in the air aiming at anybody, I crouched down behind a big mugumo tree, it had a large bark that provided cover from stray bullets and any unwanted attention, it made me invincible for a moment, blending perfectly with the environment with my skin and the evening times.
I knew this place very well, every nook and cranny of hiding spots, remembering the times I used to play, right here with my friend’s surreptitiously. Wails filled the silent evening that was closely turning into night. I was sending countless prayers to the God above to spare me; I am still young, cut out from school! Alone in here, in the dark, where we used to play hide and seek with Lulu, Okuto and I back when things were perfect, when we had peace and harmony amongst us, we didn’t care about the different tribes in our community, we loved one another and coexisted peacefully.
I held my breath at the forest floor, it was becoming more cold into the night, and the jet black of the evening was quickly covering the evening sky, and as the wails were fading into the darkness, the resolute I became, but I needed a rest for the day, so I laid my head on the warmth of the forest floor, just at the foot of the tree and forgot the moments’ chaos and just breath.
Before slumber took over, I glanced keenly ahead and what I saw shook the tiredness out of my numb body, my breath hiked and in a second I became sanguine, my friend Lulu was right ahead of me, in one of our hideouts, just as nervous as I was, written all over his face from what I could read were sadness, despair, fear, just like I was. He was relieved to see me but when I saw him shook his head, I felt defeated. My need to reach out rose, I ignored the heavy footsteps of the bandits and crouched down as I ran to where Lulu was, but before I reached his hideout, I was lifted off by the collar of my t-shirt, and all the hopes I had to reach my friend was all gone! I was defeated.
