Jane and Nelly were very surprised to find Dirk gone and asked a few people. One boy called Strang Well said he saw Dirk disappear near a gorse bush. The girls looked there and saw another hole." This place is full of holes. We should be careful." said Jane. She took a torch and pointed it down. She saw a trampoline and Dirk was sprawled on it, snoozing! "Dirk. Dirk!" she whispered. But he would not wake up! "Nelly, pack a few things. We're going down."
Nelly got some food, water, torches, candles, matches, and the owl and dog things. Then she, Jane, and Lily climbed down and Linny flew. "Dirk!" Jane whispered in his ear. Then Lily whined and pawed at something. It was a shot poking in his back. Nelly took it out. "Sleep serum! Take some. We might need it." she said. The girls hauled him up. He was heavy. Then they moved through the winding, passage ways, Jane lighting the way. "I think we're lost!" said a voice behind them.
Nelly and Jane froze. They looked at Lily. To their surprise, her tail was wagging. They turned around. "George! Georga!" they exclaimed. "Hey, you have rope" said Jane. "Yeah" said Georga. "You could've tied it to the trampoline, held on to the other ends and trailed it along the floor. It's clear too" said Jane, wistfully. "Oh, so we wouldn't have gotten lost?" said George. "Yes!" said Jane. "Sorry! said Georga indignantly. "Well, because of you we're lost" Jane retorted.
"Shh!" said George suddenly. "I can hear something!"
