Meanwhile, what has happened to Nelly? Ogern marched away with her and Dirk. Nelly could see chalk marks on the wall and Ogern was following the black ones. Suddenly he stopped. They were at a dead end. Ogern murmured a few words that sounded like "Fragile China" and suddenly the whole wall slid aside. Ogern marched inside, dumped Nelly and Dirk on a stone bench, and exited the cave, sealing the wall behind him.
The cave was dark, and the only light came from a dim candle in the middle of the room. Boxes and empty cartons were stacked on top of each other here and there. "Smugglers!" Nelly murmured. She got up of the bench and started trying desperately to find a way out. Suddenly, there came the hoot of an owl. Nelly jumped in surprise. There couldn't possibly be an owl down in these deep, dark passages! Then she remembered Linny. The pet must have followed them into the cave! Hearing Linny's hoot gave her hope. She remembered Ogern's words "Fragile China". Then... "Nelly?" Dirk had woken up!
