When We Met

This is funny thing to think about actually. We met while working at camp. I had just joined and the head person was giving me a tour and stuff, and then I saw her.

"So. Any questions, come to me. Kids crying, come to me. Try to be chill but smart." The boss says.

"Got it. Uhm, where do I go?" I look around. It's super open out here.

"Well, you don't have anything right now, so just meet another counselor and work with them." She explains.

"Ok. Thank you." I wander off looking for someone interesting to talk to.

Nobody.

I see two guys sitting at the bench together, talking. They look fun. So I walk over and sit down.

"Hi." I smile.

"Hey." The say at the same time. "You new?" One of them asks me.

"Yeah." I nod my head.

"Cool. Uh, we were about to play cards. Goldfish. You wanna play?" The same guy invites.

"Of course. What's your name? And what's his name?" I cross-examine them both. Look both of them up and down. Nice style.

"I'm Luke. That's Andrew." He points at the guy across the table from him. Andrew waves. I wave back and smile.

My hands are folding on the picnic table as I listen to him talk. Then a kid brings over a deck of cards.

"Cool cards." I say. They have a rainbow tye-dye look on them.

"Thanks," He replies. "What's your name?"

"(Y/N). What's yours?" I question.

"Charlie." He answers.

Andrew shuffles the cards and then a girl comes up from behind and scares him. "Boo!" She shouts. The cards slip from his hands and we all laugh.

I look at her. She has (color) hair. Beautiful. Her eyes brighten up in the sunlight. Her smile is huge and her laugh makes me smile on the inside and outside.

"Oh my god, bro. You always do this. I almost had the perfect shuffle going." Andrew precisely explains to the girl.

She sits down next to him, right across from me, and we make eye contact. Her hand reaches for me.

"What's your name? I'm (G/N)." She tries to shake my hand. I take it and the eye contact doesn't stop.

"Hi. My name's (Y/N). Nice to meet you." We finish shaking hands and she looks at Andrew who's attempting to shuffle the cards.

Luke looks at me for a second, then looks away. "What?" I ask.

"Oh nothing." He smirks and sits up straighter.

I don't say anything and ignore his understatement.

"Yes!" Andrew cheered.

"Oh look at that," (H/N) points at the shuffles cards, "He finally shuffled the damn cards." She giggles and looks at me again. "He can never shuffle correctly." She covers her mouth and whispers to me.

I chuckle and respond, "I'm starting to see that."

She giggles and is faced with Andrew's glare.

"What?" She retorts.

"I can hear y'all." He retorts back.

"Hear what?" She looks at me in confusion.

I return the favor and also make a confused expression.

She nods at me and he starts to hand out the cards.

"You take really long." The kid laughs.

We all laugh at Andrew again, and he rolls his eyes at these accusations made against him and his shuffling 'skills'.

While we play, (G/N) asks for if I have any 2's.

I respond with "Goldfish", and she stares into my soul.

"Ok (G/N) I don't think she has it, relax." Luke stops the fusion.

"But I've already asked all of you guys." She whines. Then when she picks up her card from the deck, she slumps her back. Making me believe that she didn't get the 2 she was looking for.

When it's my turn, I ask Andrew for an Ace, and he responds with "Goldfish". I frown of course, and pick up my card from the deck as well.

It's a 2.

As the table goes around and it's back to (G/N), she asks Luke this time is he had any 2's. He gives her one and she smiles, then asks Charlie who's says to go goldfish. She frowns, but is happy she got something.

I smirk when it gets to my turn and look straight at her eyes. She looks at me back puzzled, and the I hit her with the greatest question.

"Hey (G/N). Do you have any.....2's?" I ask with courage and smile.

Her eyes shoot wide, and the table goes crazy. "Damn!" They all yell.

Her jaw drops and she drops her head onto the table, pounding her fists, and I start to laugh, but wait for her cards to be handed over.

She looks at me with disgust and hands me three 2's.

"Crazy." Andrew puts his hands back in disbelief.

"Book!" I state and smile with courage at her.

She nearly flips me off, but remembers there's kid at the table and I smile again.

When the game is almost done, it's just Luke and Charlie left. They stare into each other's souls whenever one another takes a turn.

(G/N) looks at me multiple times then looks away quickly. I wonder what she's thinking. So, to end the silence between us, I ask a question.

"So, what do you do all day?"

"Watch kids mostly." She responds, nodding.

"Is watching kids something you favor?" I wonder.

"Not really, but the pay is good." She smiles and laughs.

I like her laugh. And her smile.

I laugh as well and our conversation goes on and on, subjects changing.

The game has ended already. The kid won. Luke was not happy about it, but it's not like he can do anything about it.

"What are you lovebirds gossiping about?" Luke asks piling the cards into the box.

"Nothing." We retort, ignoring the 'lovebirds' part.

Luke and Andrew both smirk at each other and start their own conversation.

"Why don't you work with me today?" She mentions at me.

"Sure. I don't have anything assigned yet, so sounds good." I agree and we walk off.

"Bye cuties!" Luke yells to us.

We giggle without any awkwardness and she brings me to a room full of kids.

A different girl counselor walks out, and we sit at one of the tables in the corner, continuing to talk about whatever.

Luke walks pass the room a few times looking at us talk, we wonder what he's doing, but ignore it every time.

"He's so weird." She giggles, and flips her hair away.

It's so flowy.

"Im starting to see that." I agree.
