Top student, rich family, any choice in possible careers! What did I not have?

But... I don't know... I feel like something is missing. Something that seems important, but I can't put my finger on it.

"Luz!" My head snapped up from my dull desk. "Can you please tell me what abominations are most likely made of?" The teacher smirked.

"Reanimated matter, sir." I couldn't help but smirk as my teacher muttered 'correct' while turning back to the black drop.

Yeah, why I'm I moping around? I have a great life...

"SSSSSssscreechhhHHHHH"

Finally the end of class!

"Alright, class! Don't forget to read the section I have assigned and trust me. I'll know if you didn't because there might be a pop quiz."

There goes the teacher giving the hint about the test. I thought pop quizzes were supposed to be surprises. But he warns everyone before he gives them!

Luckily this was my last class of the day which meant I didn't have to deal with everyone. The bad news to that was... I had to go home. Maybe I could ask my mom if I could 'study' with Amber.

Ughhhhh! I hated that girl. She was a popular girl, which is why my mother forced me to be friends with her. But behind that pretty face was an evil person. She bullied everyone.

Principal Hal did nothing about it too. I mean he never punishes me either... but still!

I watched as Gus ran, ready to go home I bet. Ugh, if I don't hurry home Mother will ask where I was. Besides I don't want to have to bribe Amber to tell my Mamá we were 'studying', the last time I did that.

A shiver ran down my spine.

Yeah, it wasn't that great.

I walked in silence, it wasn't like I had any friends. Who needs friends anyway? They're useless, just a bunch of people you have to waste time on.

The eerie forest was unsettling, but I continued down the path to Noceda Manor.

Why can't people just leave me alone? Amber always tried to drag me to do random stuff. Which included bullying others. Then there were the teachers, maybe I can bribe them to leave me alone.

I shut the thought down. If I did that, they might report me to Principal Hal. Then my mother would hear about it, and whoop de doo. I'll get punished.

Sometimes... for just a moment I think Mamà blames me for what happened to dad. I don't blame her, it was my fault.

A tear slipped down my cheek and I quickly wiped it off.

There is no room to be weak, not in the Boiling Isles. You're weak, and everyone will exploit you. That's why you have to be smarter than everyone else, harder, tougher and show no emotion.

This was the way to get by on the Isle. Everything is evolved to kill you. So you have to be stronger, better even.

The huge house came into sight, and I couldn't help it but sigh. Don't get me wrong the house was beautiful, gorgeous even. But it lacked the warmth of a home, ever since papá died, it hasn't been the same.

Mamá grew cold, I couldn't blame her. She realized just like I did. The only way to live was to be hard.

That way, no one can hurt us again...

"Luz Noceda you're five minutes late! What took you so long?" The sharp voice of my mother cut the air like knives.

"Lo siento, Mamá." I bowed my head. Hopefully, I won't get the whip today. "I had to ask the teacher a question on the assignment. Can't get less than a hundred so I doubled checked on a question."
