Pov. Masky

It was a cold, cloudy day in the middle of autumn. I ran through the decaying city but soon enough my lungs failed me and I had to take a break. Trying to catch my breath I looked at the familiar hodded figure to my left. It took me quite a while to catch my breath and silently I cursed my cigarettes.

We were supposed to find something for the Operator in this stupid city but I questioned if it was really here since there is nothing in this place that seems interesting to me.

These buildings reminded me of the old times when I wasn't working for the Operator. When we had fun. When Jay and Alex were still with us and when Brian and I went to college together.

I snapped out of my thoughts when I felt a hand on my shoulder and saw one waving and snapping in front of my face.
"Huh?"
Hoddie made a let's go motion towards the buildings
"Oh yeah let's go"
Yet I could feel his concerned look on me
"I'm fine don't worry, just in my mind. Let's go"
He gave me a nod and started to lead the way. With that we headed deeper in the city. If it was the first one that I saw I'd be amazed but decaying cities and lost places got normal to us. Yet we still got curious about the view from one of the taller buildings so we went in.

The floor was covered in dirt and plants were growing all over the place. Nature's really trying to get this place back. It amazed me. Vines were hanging down from the ceiling, weeds and flowers were growing from cracks in the walls and on the floor and moss was growing where the rain had reached the wall through the broken windows.

We got up the stairs. Carefully so we wouldn't slip and fall down the stairs. The whole moss and weeds made the stone staircase damn slippery. Half way up my hooded friend suddenly slipped, falling backwards against my chest and face. Curse the fact that I wasn't that tall. Still I was able to help him finding back his balance. He gave me a silent nodd as a thank you. Ever since the incident he got quiet and only talked when he really had to. It took me a while until I understood his way of communicating. Until I understood the gestures, grunts and huffs as what he meant.

Without any further complications we got up on the roof, not thinking about the damaged infrastructure of the decaying building. We didn't listen to the cracking of the floor, with every step we took, either. We were just amazed by the view. So high up everything looked so small and pretty. I didn't expect it to be so beautiful. Soon my hodded friend got in my view, looking around for something. I watched him for a while. He stopped and kneeled down but I couldn't make out what he was doing. After a few seconds he got back up and turned towards me. He came back and held some flowers towards me. I carefully took them and took a look at them.
"yeah you are right, Sally would really appreciate them"
I saw him hitting a hand in his face, telling me that I was an idiot apparently but I didn't knew what he meant.
"huh? What is it?"
He made a pointing towards me and I gave him a surprise look under my mask.
"they are for me?"
He gave me a nod and I had to smile. I thanked him. Yes we were heartless monsters who didn't hesitate to kill someone when told but yet sometimes Hoodie was able to reach my soft side that was buried deep inside of me. When we were younger Brian had been able to reach that side as well. Those long nights on school nights or on weekends. He tried to talk me out of smoking but I failed to stop due to the stress of school.

I was so deep in my thoughts and memories that I didn't even notice the hand waving in front of me. When my vision focused I saw Hoodie and I felt his concerned look once more.
"geez Hoodie calm down and let me dwell in memories alright?"
He back off a little and looked around after a short nod. Now I know he's feeling offended since he made a little "hmpf". Something normal when he's trying to help me and I tell him that I'm good even though I'm clearly not.

I chuckled and went to the edge to take a better look at the environment. I was still surprised by the beauty of the view. The wind was strong up here and was dragging on my clothes like it wanted to pull me back. Little did I know that the wind was soon about to change. I called Hoodie over to watch the view when a strong wind blew from behind me, which caused me to stumble. With that I stumbled right into the yawning depths right in front of me.

I heard someone yell my name but I couldn't make out who or what it was. I thought I was falling but when I opened my eyes I was surprised to look at the floor which wasn't coming closer. I felt tugging on my jacket and a rough yank sent me flying backwards into someone else. I had my eyes closed to calm down and to thank whoever God for saving me.

After I calmed down I opened my eyes. I looked at a pair of arms with yellowish sleeves wrapped tightly around me from behind. A smile creeped up on my face.
"Thank you"
He gave me a gentle pat on the chest as a no problem. Now I was happier than ever to have a partner with me on missions. I thanked him silently over and over again. Soon we went to complete our mission.
