It's on Fire

Prologue

"Come on, Mom! We're going to be late for the movie!" I scream, while tugging her arm sleeve.

She rolled her eyes, smiling before locking the car door. Afterwards, she runs over to cross the street before any vehicles could pass by. I smiled at her, one of my cheeky grins she always falls for. Passing by more pedestrians and baby strollers, I look at my destination. I climb the stairs watching my mother scurry right behind me. Leaning against the booth, I take a look at the chat of movies.

"Oh...Umm...Mom?" I hesitate.
"Yes, cutie pie?" She smiles kindly.

"It's not until tomorrow.." My voice trails off.

"It's okay, we'll find something to do." She assures before dragging me back down to the ground floor. I send a quick text to my friend, before I look to my side, and find her not there.

"Mom?" I stammer, my eyes scanning for her.
"Hey, Maddie!" A voice calls. I snap my head into the direction of the voice, and find my mom waving over at me, standing under a 2 meter high tiki torch. The Sparks and flames were vivid and really bright. I smile as I run over to her petite body. Her eyes glistening under the moonlight, her hair light, contrasting the dark background.

A great time to take a-

A creaking noise is heard and my gaze falls upon a tilting torch.

Picture.

Two men grab the torch and detain it before it could fall.

"It's okay. You can take your picture. We..." The man with blonde hair struggles to hold it tight. "We got this.

I smile before grabbing my phone, positioning my mother's figure in the picture.

"One, two..." I start, and I couldn't snap the picture because all I could see was a burst of mixes of red, orange, and yellow. Oh, and a burnt body.

That belonged to my mother.

The phone I was holding for so long, dropped and shattered into a bunch of pieces.

Just like my heart.
