ROXANNE POV
I jolted awake, my heart hammering against my ribs and I sucked in a slow breath, grounding myself.
I wasn't in Garry's house anymore.
I exhaled, sinking deeper into the couch cushions. The apartment was quiet, the soft glow of morning filtering through the curtains. Peaceful.
My gaze landed on the half-empty mug of coffee sitting on the table.
I must've dozed off watching whatever late-night movie had been playing.
Rubbing a hand over my face, I reached for the remote and turned off the TV.
Stretching out my stiff limbs, I pushed myself to my feet and headed toward the kitchen, craving something fresh and hot.
It had been days since Raphaël walked out of here with Angelina. The eerie silence that followed their departure lingered like a ghost, unsettling yet oddly welcome.
No sign of him, no sign of Kendrick. Not even Garry had tried sniffing me out. Maybe I'd been right-maybe they really didn't know where I was hiding.
Ken had found my workplace, sure. But looking back, it was obvious he was just trying to shake me, make me slip up. I wasn't playing that game anymore. Not with him. Not with whatever new crew Garry had pulled together.
Still, it nagged at me.
If I was really so unimportant, why was Garry so desperate to drag me back under his control? Why did he want to wed me with Kendrick?
The thought sent a slow burn through my veins. I needed answers. Real ones.
Garry had never given a damn about me, that much was clear. But he had protected me from the guys in his gang who had tried to lay a hand on me.
It was the only time he ever acted like a father.
I sighed, shaking the thoughts away.
"I've got bills to pay." I muttered, shifting my focus back to breakfast.
Rent was coming up fast and getting lost in the past wouldn't keep the lights on.
I had just turned back to the stove when a knock at the door made me freeze.
I tensed, my mind running through possibilities as I slowly wiped my hands on a towel. Heart steady, I walked to the door, peering through the peephole.
I blinked.
Raphaël.
Cracking the door open, I met his gaze as he pushed it the rest of the way and stepped inside.
My grip tightened on the handle as I glanced down the hall before shutting the door behind him.
"Are you planning on explaining why you're here and this early in the morning?" I asked, arms crossing.
He looked at me, amusement flickering behind those sharp eyes. "Just wanted to see if you were still around, kitten."
I rolled my eyes and turned on my heel, heading back toward the kitchen.
