In place of the body now there was only a white outline, there were no signs of the body being dragged away, no blood, no marks on the floor... it was as if the body had just gotten up and left!
"Who did this?!" Alise shouted "You were supposed to keep an eye on the body! How did you fail such a simple task?! Did YOU move the body?!" she continued, grabbing Abe by his tie and pulling him down to her eye-level.
"Woah hey calm down! It wasn't me! Somebody, NOT ME, must have moved it between the time I was the last person alone with the body in the room and then stepped out for a few minutes to take care of some personal business- that you don't need to know about. Could have been anybody... Except me"
The attorney took a deep, long breath and exhaled, letting go of the detective's tie "You had ONE job goddammit... did you at least finish your 'tests' on the body before that happened?"
"Yes" Abe said, fixing his tie.
"Alright..." Alise sighed, guess now they had one more mystery to solve.
Slowly, more people began making their way over, hearing the commotion and wanting to know what had happened, first the butler, then the chef, they both got there, asking what happened and wondering if the body had moved on its own; the detective seemed to be considering that as a possibility, which got Alise to intervene. "Let's try keeping this tied to reality, please! The one who moved the body was obviously the murderer!" lighting roared again.
"Bully! Quite a storm out there, eh chaps? What are you doing huddled here in fear?" the Colonel spoke up, walking towards the group.
"We have a zombie problem" the chef hurriedly said.
"No we d-"
"Ah! Homonecrosis. The most dangerous game. Well, if someone needs to put the old lad down again, I'm well up for the privilege" The colonel said, nodding.
Alise and Abe exchanged a confused look "What do you mean by 'again', and what do you mean by 'privilege'?" the detective asked.
"I'm just saying, I've got plenty of... experience" The Colonel explained.
"So do I" the chef joined in.
The attorney facepalmed "Anyway- we need to do something about this! Colonel, you... you go do your own thing and tell us if you see the body anywhere- and Benjamin, lock the gates please"
"Certainly, Mx. Vermont, but locks won't keep people from getting out-"
"Locks won't, but Chef will"
Slowly everyone went to do what they were either asked to, or wanted to do, the Colonel went to hunt for 'the old bag of bones', while the butler rushed to secure the gates, which left Alise and Abe alone again.
"You know I think we forgot the most important question of all during our arousing game of whodunnit. Why?" Abe eventually spoke up.
"Why?"
"Why did he invite us all here? Why tonight? He said we were celebrating something, but he never specified what. It's almost as if this whole shindig of a hootenanny was just a ruse" the detective said, beginning to walk and Alise followed him. "Mark was my friend- had been for years, then he went quiet. I knew something was wrong, I just never figured out what. Now I guess I never will..."
Alise looked down "It seems like he went silent on everyone... honestly both Damien and I have been wondering why he called us all here too, the invitation came out of nowhere and I can't help but wonder if there's something bigger at play here"
"That... is exactly what I was thinking too- Look, I'm gonna level with you. You're my new partner. I've been working with them for years. Now I've been doing this for a long time, and I know something is wrong. There is a murderer-" thunder clapped "... here amongst us, and we need to find it, and you look like a trustworthy person. I know we just met, but I am an excellent judge of character. Excellent like a fox" he winked.
