"So you're not going to tell us?" Hafsa asked. It was Friday, the best day of the week. Hafsa has a light pink scarf that perfectly matched her light pink jumpsuit.
"Tell you what?" I was confused. I was just ready to get over the day. Tonight was Easton's birthday party and that meant birthday cake.
"She's not telling us," Kim directed at Hafsa. I might as well not be standing here. Kim wore a plaid skirt and white blouse. I wasn't sure how she planned to survive in her wedges but fashion was pain. Her words, not mine.
"Fake friends everywhere," Hafsa continued in the private but not really private conversation. I was still standing there.
"You're my only true friend, Hafsa." Kim pulled Hafsa in a close side hug, both of them finally looking at me like I've committed a heinous crime.
"We should just ditch Maya." Kim nodded in agreement, both ready to leave me. I know my dramatic friends and I know that Hafsa will sit with Kim while I will be seated next to Nathan and both of them will refuse to turn around for a whole ten minutes. Ten minutes can be an eternity when it is silent.
"What are you guys talking about?" I asked again, hoping for any crumbs.
They exchanged looks with a silent agreement passing between them. I knew that look very well, they were going to give me a crumb or maybe if I am lucky the whole cookie.
"When's your first date?" Kim throws out there. Kim and Hafsa link their arms on either side of me, as we walked to class.
The puzzle pieces clicked into place. They knew about the bet. I'm not sure how they exactly know since it was supposed to be kept hush-hush so the coach doesn't find out. I just knew my friends had their ways.
"Well, I would love to have one at the first break, another at lunch and maybe one after school," I joked. Well, it's not really a joke, if it was possible I would take the dates with both hands and one under my arm to get it over and done with.
"It's not that simple," Kim replies. I take her words into consideration since she had the most dating experience among the three of us. Actually, she had all the dating experiences.
"This whole thing sounds like a disaster waiting to happen," Hafsa added.
"I agree," Ash shouted in passing. She was walking in the opposite direction.
"How do you know what we are talking about!?"
"Have you made any other bad decision lately?" Ash then turned around the corner before I could say more, returning to the conversation she was having with someone else.
"She doesn't know about the tuna sandwich I packed for lunch." I rolled my eyes. Hafsa and Kim laughed.
We stopped just outside the classroom. The room was full and we still had time before we needed to settle down.
"Ash is right, it is a bad decision," Hafsa reiterated. She was the most rational person ever but sometimes the rewards outweighed the risks.
"I think it's nice that you'll find get some dating XP. You never know, you might even find someone." Kim had tried to set me up with a few guys previously. Obviously, I decline and she respected my wishes. Usually, she was just asking as a bridge between guys who were too scared to approach me. Who would even want to date a guy who is scared of you anyway?
"I'm not looking for anyone, I'm just trying to do what's best for me." I was firm in my conviction. My competitive nature might be getting the better of me if the prize was stupid. There was nothing stupid about becoming captain at all.
"Are you sure it's the best thing for you?" Hafsa was softer this time. She had seen firsthand how stubborn I could be. She would back down from this. While she had her opinions, she was someone who rather deescalated an argument.
"Well I won't know unless I try." The way I see it, I was killing two birds with one stone. After a few dates, I would at least know what to expect when I one day decided there was a guy who was worth my time and effort. At least by then, I wouldn't be a bumbling fool.
"A few mistakes never hurt anyone, Hafsa. If anything I think now is the perfect time for us to make a few mistakes." Kim agreed. The stories of all her bad dates came to mind. She's the perfect person to seek advice from.
"It's a few dates, it's not like I have to marry anyone." We entered the classroom to sit down. Nathan was already there, waiting for Kim while talking to Easton and Rayanna.
"Isn't that the point of dating? Like you're trying to find someone who you want to marry in the end?"
"Well yes, maybe Maya will find her future husband this year."
"Maya's getting married to who knows?" Nathan asks, getting the end of the conversation.
"Mia will scare away any guy before they get close to the altar," Easton joined.
"Don't be mean, Easton." Rayanna lightly elbowed him. This is why she was the better half of the couple.
"Whoever Mia is, I'm sure she's not scary." I roll my eyes at Easton's childish payback. He called me Mia whenever he felt like it. At some point I stopped replying with my name is Maya.
"I think we are all too young to be talking about weddings. If anything, we should be talking about an event that is way closer," Hafsa diverted the conversation. They didn't know about the bet and it was better to keep the knowledge to ourselves.
"Yeah, I can't wait to have cake tonight. Best part of birthday parties." Kim caught on. The rest of the time was spent talking about Easton's party, the topic of weddings and dates left in the dust.
However, my thoughts circled one very important question; how do I get a date?
