"Is that Steve Harrington?" Caroline held her hand up to her forehead to shield her eyes from the setting sun as she stood next to Sadie, who was searching for her keys.
"Who?"
"Oh my god, it definitely is. I forgot he lived up here."
Sadie followed her gaze across the street. The boy from the record store was in the driveway of what she and her mom called the Danbury Street castle. The house was at least twice as large as the others on the road (which was saying something since every house on Danbury was nice and spacious) and had an in-ground pool in the backyard.
"Oh my god, that's so weird. I've never seen him before today. I just ran into him at the Record Store, I dropped a cassette and he picked it up for me."
"Well, that was gentlemanly. Oh look, he sees us." Caroline waved, "Hey Harrington!"
He looked like he'd been caught doing something, though all Sadie could see in his trunk were groceries.
"Hi, Caroline." His voice wasn't quite as loud as Caroline's, it sounded a bit sheepish and definitely exasperated.
Caroline stepped off of Sadie's porch and walked to the middle of the street. Rolling her eyes, Sadie continued to dig for her keys.
"How's your summer been?"
"Oh you know...busy."
"You still hanging out with Wheeler?"
"Oh yeah, 10 months today actually."
"Oh, nice." Caroline didn't seem to think it was really that nice, "Have you met my friend Sadie? Seems like you guys are neighbors."
Sadie gave a half-hearted wave from the door, she didn't feel like talking to this kid. She was used to how guys looked straight through her. If a man didn't find you attractive, he wasn't going to attempt to get to know you. It was a fact of Sadie's life. This dude, Steve or whatever, had treated her the same way. He'd hardly looked at her, even when they were joking about Gene and Paulette.
He hadn't been rude, but she knew that he thought nothing of their interaction, and he thought nothing of her aside from being a clutz. So she didn't feel any need to make an effort to converse. Especially when he didn't even seem inclined to talk to Caroline.
"I don't think so." He said.
Exactly. He didn't even remember her from minutes before.
"Tomorrow's her first day at Hawkins. She moved here over the summer."
"Cool. Hey." He waved in Sadie's direction. It was an awkward wave, his hand wasn't in the air for long enough before dropping back to his side.
She gave a thin-lipped smile before using her newly found keys to unlock the door, leaving it open for Caroline as she entered the dark house.
Within a minute Caroline was sat on Sadie's kitchen counter, eating an apple and telling her the whole tale of Steve "the hair" Harrington; how he'd always been Mr. popular with his two dick bag friends Tommy (who they happened to work with at the pool) and Carol (who Caroline was forced to hang around since they'd grown up together). She told Sadie about how he was a total player, he had his own makeout spots and everything, but everything changed when he started going with Nancy Wheeler.
Nancy Wheeler, who seemed to be the only person that cared that Barbara Holland was missing. Nancy Wheeler who suddenly became good friends with Jonathan Byers while his brother was missing, good enough friends to convince Steve Harrington that she was cheating on him.
Sadie gasped when she heard what had been written on the movie theatre billboard.
"What an asshole!"
