Prologue

I grew up believing in God. My daddy took my to church every Sunday. I grew up believing in love. That love is greater than any other feeling. Love conquers all.

My mother left me when I was almost five. By now I know the entire story. Though it never changed my feelings towards her. Not even in the nine years since the last time that I saw her.

I wish I could say that this was a happy story. A happy ever after. I can't give you false hope though. It's not in my DNA.

I remember the day. A day that was supposed to be amazing for my. My 18th birthday. I guess that's where it started. Or ended. I'm not sure anymore.

What I am sure of? That's a short list. I'm sure God loves us all in his own way. I'm sure my daddy loves me extra on the bad days. I'm sure that my mother knew exactly what she was doing too.

I wish I could say I wasn't sad. Alas, once upon a time she was a great mom to me. Too bad I don't remember those days much anymore.

This is the story about my life. Ana Leigh Evans. And I wish I didn't have to tell it this way.

CHAPTER 1
Ana

"We're going to be late!" My dad shouts.

Huffing I open my door and lug my suit case out behind me.

"Help." I state putting my hands on my hips.

Grabbing it he nods to the door of our once apartment. Getting into the car I buckle up and say a silent good bye.

The rides silent. Neither of us knowing exactly what to say to the other. Something that doesn't happen that often between us. We're close. Most days at least.

Cutting my eyes to my dad I can tell he's off some place else.

Leaning my head against the window I watch the town go by. My dads the captain of the police station here. Or he was up until two weeks ago. Before.

"You okay kiddo?" He asks glancing at me. We're nearly there now. I felt it when we crossed the county line. The life draining out of me slowly. Subtly.

"Fine. Are you?" I ask.

"Yes."

We both just lied. Also uncommon with us. Sighing I play with the string of my hoodie. The car stops and I glance up to see Aunt Emmy rushing the car making me smile slightly.

"My god girl look at you!" She says hugging me tightly.

"Hi Aunt Em." I laugh stepping back. Callie walks over hugging me and I smile. At 14 she's nearly as tall as her mother.

"Stop hoggin then women!" I shriek and race to my uncle. "Hey baby." He murmurs hugging me tightly.

"I missed you so much." I whisper. Tears filling my eyes.

"You're here now. Everything is going to be okay. You'll see." Nodding I wipe my eyes and follow them inside. The smell of food makes my stomach grumble.
