Brown's POV:As Orange's body fell to the floor, I lowered the gun and took a breath. I didn't exactly like killing, but I had to if I wanted to get back home.
Home. That was a thing that I wasn't sure if I had anymore. I had pushed K'dela away from me so that it wouldn't hurt if something happened to her, but then someone else managed to worm into that spot and break down all my defenses. I cared, and that was my undoing.
Red looked at me and nodded approvingly. That old snake never really liked us. He tolerated our presence, but he was really looking forward to the time when he could let us go and become someone else's problem.
Especially K'dela. I swear, no matter how many times she was beaten, starved, or reprimanded, she always managed to snap back with that tongue of hers. I never got it. She was more like our father, while I took on most of our mother.
Speaking of, Black bared her teeth in a snarl and stepped in front of White slightly. "Don't."
"How are you going to make me?" Red asked, stepping forward.
"W-wait," White stuttered, "Bl-black? You're one of them? But what were you doing t-"
"It'd be better if you didn't ask, human," Red spat. "Now, K'dela, step aside."
"No." Black pried herself out of White's grip and shakily stood right in front of him.
"Step. Aside."
"Set valth nar," Black growled. I flashed back to the day when Tal'nera came back... injured. The phrase, roughly translated into 'you've crossed a line,' was usually used in terms of someone who was closer to you as an acquaintance. It had mostly a negative connotation, and was sometimes used as a warning when someone was coming too close to your territory. It was rude, taunting, and generally not something to say when someone was trying to not care too much.
Especially when I was trying not to care too much. I probably shouldn't have said what I did, though. But you do what you have to do to keep your sanity.
"I thought your brother told you to never say that again," Red snarled. In a flash, he lashed out at Black, sweeping her ankles out from under her with a loud crack.
"That fracture hadn't even healed!" White cried as Black started to curse, grabbing her ankles. He started to back up until his back hit the pile of supplies. "By all the stars, is there anything that you understand about human anatomy?"
"What do you think, Brown?" Red asked me instead. "Snap his neck or shoot him?"
I looked over at White. In all circumstances, I was sure that he would have been a great person to be around, but since most of the crew shunned him, I was forced to turn a blind eye as well. Although Black really seemed to be close with him. Definitely not in a way that she would notice, but in a way that it would be harder for her to kill him. "I want to do it."
Red looked back at me and smiled. "Go ahead, Umbitr. Go ahead."
"Please," Black begged. "Don't kill him. Don't. Brother, don't. Please."
It was too late for that, K'dela. Far too late. I wasn't going to lose someone else. Not now. I advanced on White and he looked around like a scared little mouse. A mouse that had the power to turn a wolf. "You've been a terrible problem to us," I said. "You and your entire race."
"It wasn't..." Black gasped, "it wasn't them who hurt him."
I stopped. Turned around and stared at her. Red aimed a kick at her face and she only barely stopped it with her hand. "What?"
