Before Punk Hazard, Flashback

It was night time, and I wasn't able to sleep. It's hasn't been long since I've been on the infamous Thousand Sunny ship and so far, I've been keeping my distance from the crew.

"I still have so many questions about things." I said with a sigh. "Even though the captain hasn't said much about it, why did he let me on this ship?"

Walking over to the kitchen, I noticed the how quiet things were compared to how loud the crew is during the day. It was easy to get lost in my thoughts this way when there wasn't the seemingly bottomless energy from the Straw Hats surrounding me.

'Knowing them now, after spending some time with them... It makes me wonder why there pirate crews out there who are just looking for war when... Luffy says the sea is for everyone. I suppose that I'd like to see that one day.'

Taking out an empty glass and about to fill it with some cold water from the sink, I let out a long sigh after changing my mind, setting the cup down on the surface of the table next to me.

"The sea... Is for everyone." I said out loud, not realizing that someone else had walked into the kitchen without me knowing.

"Sure is." A voice spoke up.

In reaction, I didn't see who it was but instead grabbed one of the knives from the sink and swung it towards the person who stood there.

"Woah! It's just me!" The person said to stop me, holding both of their hands up high.

"...S- Sanji?" I questioned when I recognized his voice. "I'm so sorry!" I said, immediately dropping the knife onto the floor which landed with a loud thud.

"Good to know you're always on guard." Sanji said with a short laugh. "I gotta admit, you had me worried there for a moment."

"I didn't mean to- I was just- I should've-" I was saying all at once, my shock of holding a weapon to him made me worried about what he'd think of me now.

"It's okay. I should have said something earlier." He said, bending down to pick up the knife and briefly inspect it. "See? No harm to me or the knife. It's okay. Really." His voice was calm and gentle, unlike me who's hands were shaking and heart racing from the encounter.

Taking a step back from him, he noticed how tense I was. He walked over to stand behind the sink and wash the knife before putting it away. The whole time, none of us said anything to each other and it was quiet.

'I don't really know what to say to him. He's not an easy person to read at times like this.'

"What are you doing up this late anyways? Having trouble falling asleep?" He spoke up first, breaking the silence.

"Um, yeah. I couldn't sleep." I answered. "I didn't expect someone else to be up this late other than the watch and it's supposed to be the Captain tonight."

"Couldn't sleep? It's the same for me. I might have something for that on nights like these." He said.

Before I could answer he began to prepare something. He warmed up some milk and put in some honey before stirring it and pushing over the glass in my direction. I didn't take it right away.

"There's no need to worry." He said when I was hesitant. "Did you really think I'd poison the food or something like that?"

"Oh, it's just that... How can you trust me like this? So easily. All of you seem to... I'm a former marine." I said out loud for the first time.

His reaction wasn't something that I expected. He began to smile and seem to hold back on his laughter which confused me.

"What's so funny?" I wondered.
